Year 1/2
Overview of Learning
Wow! We are already halfway through the year! Welcome back to another term of wonderful learning and exciting events in this shorter term. All the students did a wonderful job of presenting their learning in their Three Way Conferences and it was lovely to see how confident they were in communicating their goals for the term.
We are beginning the term with swimming lessons (Weeks 2, 3 and 4) and a wonderful toy incursion for our unit of work ' Toy Story'. Towards the end of the term, the school will engage in a week of exciting STEM activities, beginning with our STEM Opening Ceremony. Look out for more details later in the term.
We know our students will continue to learn and engage in many different learning opportunities throughout the coming weeks!

English
In Reading and Viewing, students will continue to recognise and read short vowels, common long vowels, consonant digraphs, and consonant blends. Students will use comprehension strategies such as, visualising and predicting, to build literal and inferred meaning. They will listen to and discuss poems, rhymes and songs, imitating and inventing sound patterns like rhyme.
In Writing, students will focus on constructing and sequencing a procedural text. With this text, students will focus on writing clear instructions to enable the reader to achieve a goal. Students will also use rhyme and alliteration to write poems. They will continue to focus on working through all the phases of the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing). Ideas will be explored and expanded on in their Writer’s Notebook.
In Speaking and Listening, students will continue to focus on phonemic awareness by manipulating more complex sounds in spoken words, through blending and segmenting sounds, phoneme deletion and substitution. They will discuss different types of texts and identify their purpose (i.e. enjoyment, learn something new etc). Through sharing poetry, students will share thoughts and imitate rhymes and chants.
Maths
In Number and Algebra, students in Year 1 will recognise, continue and create pattern sequences including numbers, symbols and objects, including Australian coins. They will learn how to skip count by twos, fives and tens.
In Year 2, students will explore multiplication and divide by one-digit numbers using repeated addition, equal grouping, arrays and partitioning, to support a variety of calculation strategies.
In Applied Mathematics (Measurement, Space, Statistics), students will measure the length of shapes and objects using informal units, recognising that units need to be uniform and placed from end-to-end to increase accuracy. They will give and follow directions to move people and objects to different locations within a space. In Grade 2, students will also recognise and read the time represented on an analogue clock to the hour, half-hour and quarter hour.
Inquiry
In the unit 'Toy Story', students will identify everyday examples of push and pull forces. They will investigate the way objects move and how this can be influenced by several factors, including their size and shape. Through various experiments, students will observe and gather evidence about how forces act in the air, water and on the ground and how they can cause objects to move or change shape.
