Prep Overview of Learning

The Prep staff would like to welcome everybody back to Term Three. We look forward to an exciting, successful term together full of learning, friendship and fun. The classroom teaching staff and room numbers are as follows:

This Term's Learning in Prep

English

In Reading and Viewing students will: 

• Review learnt common sounds for the letters of the alphabet 
• Learn some common diagraphs (two letters that make one sound eg. ck, sh, ch, th) 
• Read decodable and authentic texts developing their comprehension and phonic knowledge 
• Discuss the similarities and differences between fiction and non-fiction texts 
• Make connections between stories they read 

In Writing students will: 

• Continue to practise forming upper and lower case letters correctly 
• Draw pictures to show meaning 
• Write letters that match the corresponding sounds 
• Use capital letters and full stops in a sentence 

Mathematics 

In Maths, students will: 

• Learn how to read, write and make teen numbers 
• Add and subtract small collections together 
• Sequence days of the week and connect them to familiar events 
• Recognise and find simple 2D shapes in the environment

Inquiry 

In our Term 3 inquiry unit, “My Community”, students will  identify what ‘safety’ means to them and determine the feelings involved in familiar safe and unsafe situations. They will explain actions that they and others can take to help keep them safe in familiar environments. Through a series of community helper visits, children will identify members of their community that help them stay safe.

Key Questions the students will explore are: 

• What is safety? 
• What does it feel like to feel safe and unsafe? 
• How do I stay safe in the community? 
• Who can help me to stay safe in the community? 

Term 3 reminders: 

- Swimming weeks 2,3 and 4. 

- 100 days of school (Week 3: Friday 8th August) 

- Book Week (Week 5: Wednesday 20th August) 

- Curriculum/Professional Practice Day (Week 5: Thursday 21st August) 

- Prep Assembly (Weeks 1, 6, 8) 

- STEM festival (Week 8: 6-7pm) 

* Please ensure students wear comfortable runners and appropriate shorts/pants on the day your child is scheduled to have PE.
