The Foundation students have been busy learning how to reduce, reuse and recycle. The picture story books; Jelly Boy, Somebody Swallowed Stanley and Michael Recycle has supported students to learn about sustainability.
Buddy classes have also taught the students how to use the school compost bin.
This week students showed their support for Reconciliation Week by taking part in various activities. Students worked with their buddies to learn about it’s purpose, they decorated hands as a symbol of reconciliation, unity and the importance of community. They also made Indigenous Clay Artwork. Students were given their own clay pendant, in which they drew indigenous symbols or wrote words to promote reconciliation.
In the 3/4 space we've had a busy and exciting few weeks.
Our swimming program was a great success, with students managing smooth and efficient transitions between the bus, pool, and change rooms.
A highlight was our excursion to CERES in Brunswick, where students made recycled paper, explored how different materials decompose, and observed a rubbish trap along Merri Creek. This hands-on experience helped deepen their understanding of the 7 Rs, which we’ve been exploring in our knowledge unit on sustainability and consumption. Back in the classroom, we’ve been building on these ideas through the text The Water Princess and writing persuasive pieces with a focus on single-use plastics.
Finally, in maths, we’ve been strengthening our multiplication and division strategies and are now beginning to explore fractions.
It’s been an action-packed few weeks in Grade 5/6!
We recently wrapped up the 5/6 Winter Sports season, and we couldn’t be prouder of everyone who participated. A special congratulations to the Boys Soccer and Girls Netball team who finished at the top of their pool groups.
In the classroom, we’ve been exploring the inquiry theme of sustainability through writing debates. Students have been developing persuasive arguments and presenting their ideas with confidence and creativity. As part of this learning, they also completed and showcased their incredible Minecraft sustainable cities.
Excitement is building as we prepare for Grade 5/6 Camp this week. Students have been getting ready for what promises to be a memorable experience full of adventure, new challenges, and fun with friends.
To top it all off, we were thrilled to welcome some special guests from the Essendon Football Club! The players hosted a Q&A session where students asked thoughtful questions, followed by a fun kick-to-kick session on the oval.
What a busy time in the Community Garden this term!
We have enjoyed tasting the final fruits of Autumn and started getting our garden ready for the winter season. Students in Grade 3/4 are gaining confidence in safely using tools. We are also learning about how our garden helps us to reduce waste and be more sustainable at school. We are looking forward to using fresh veggies from the garden in our first cooking session of the year! Its coming up soon, in the last few weeks of this term.
Remember to check out our chickens if you are passing by the garden. After a whole school vote they have been officially named.
The winning names are:
Chickasaurus
Jimbob
Donald Duck
Happy winter gardening everyone!
