"How do I know what I think until I see what I say"
-E.M. Forster
We have the unique opportunity in Stage 3 to provide opportunities for students to tie together a variety of skills they have been mastering over the last 6 years of schooling. The work done in kindergarten, Stage 1, and Stage 2 around spelling, reading and writing finally starts to look like the sophisticated texts that young people will be creating as part of high school, tertiary study or even in the workplace. It is an exciting time! Perhaps most exciting, as the E.M Forster quote suggests, is that young people through writing start to interrogate and reflect on their own thoughts and opinions about topics.
This term, Stage 3 students have been creating engaging and informative multi-modal texts. Students have spent time researching and gathering information about an Australian social justice issue. We have studied events like the Wave Hill Walk Off and the Walk for Reconciliation. Local Anaiwan man Dave Widders, also spent time with all classes discussing a local perspective on these issues. Mr Widders highlighted the impact of the 1965 Freedom Rides in country NSW. With extensive research and explicit lessons in writing students have been creating websites to showcase their skill.
