Victorian Schools Shortchanged: Time for state government to commit Gonski funding to schools now

The Australian Principals Federation is concerned about recent reporting in The Age newspaper regarding approximately $2.4 billion in Gonski education funding that has not yet reached Victorian schools as intended and is to be delayed for 3 years. This situation requires immediate attention, especially as our education system faces growing challenges.

Postponing this investment for three years creates significant challenges for our schools. These funds were specifically designed to address educational disadvantage and improve student outcomes through timely implementation. Our educators are currently managing:

  • Increasing student support needs
  • More complex classroom behaviours
  • Implementation of new educational requirements and reforms
  • Resource constraints that affect daily operations

Victorian schools would benefit greatly from receiving this funding now rather than waiting. The Gonski reforms were carefully designed to ensure school funding would be needs-based and sector-blind, directing resources where they can make the most difference for students.

The APF calls on the Victorian Government to cease the delay and immediately commit the full $2.4 billion of Gonski funding to our schools, honouring not just the letter but the spirit of these critical educational reforms.

The future of Victoria depends on well-resourced schools that can prepare all students for the challenges ahead. The government must prioritise education and fulfill its responsibility to Victorian students, families, and educators.  Then we can continue to call ourselves The Education State.

We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with government representatives on developing practical solutions that address both fiscal responsibilities and the immediate needs of our students and educators.
