Year 9 Darrabi/GIRLs Program News

This term, M9D students took part in a series of powerful lessons designed to shape not just their learning, but continue to build and empower these students through knowledge.
In an environment built on trust and openness, the Man Cave facilitators, Ethan and Vinny, led an insightful workshop with our male students. This all-day workshop allowed students to dive deep into who they are and how they relate to others, whilst facilitating team-building activities and participating in topics regarding their own mental health, practical tools to use when checking in on someone and sharing their feelings in a judgment-free space. The facilitators, alongside the students, created respectful and honest conversations. They explored their own emotions and ways to share them. Students also “shouted each other out”, sharing how their mate has impacted them and why. This workshop was powerful and continued to build connection and strengthen relationships within the classroom.
We also had a visit from the State Emergency Service, who gave students a new perspective on what it means to serve the community. With hands-on activities and plenty of real-world stories, the SES team demonstrated how teamwork and quick thinking can save lives. Students walked away with practical knowledge and looked at the equipment that helps save lives. Students understood the importance of staying safe and being prepared in emergency situations and the value of volunteering and giving back. A huge thanks to the SES crew for their time and inspiration!
As our students begin to think about life beyond school, interview readiness is a vital skill. Mr. Edwards hosted an interactive session packed with practical tools and honest advice on how to make an impact in both job and scholarship interviews. This included how to leave a strong first impression (from handshake to attire!), answering questions confidently, doing research on the place of employment and the importance of self-awareness and professionalism. Students had a great time role-playing and listening to Mr Edwards' tips for when students are applying for jobs, and great insight into what an employer looks for.
Anna, the Secondary School Nurse, delivered an informative session on vaping. With facts, stories, and interactive discussion, she discussed the short and long-term impacts that vaping can have on young teens. This session helped students understand how to make informed, empowered decisions in their own lives.
