Ready, Set, Calculate! Introducing the Family Maths Challenge
At St Patrick’s, we know that some of the best learning happens when kids don’t even realize they’re "working." To help bring some of that classroom magic home, we’re launching the Family Maths Challenge! Every fortnight, we’ll share a simple, low-resource game—like this week’s Target Reach —that you can play over breakfast or while waiting for dinner.
Why play? These games are "open-ended," meaning there’s no single right path to the answer. This takes the pressure off and lets kids experiment with numbers, building the kind of flexible thinking they’ll use for the rest of their lives. Whether they are just learning to count in Prep or mastering complex operations in Grade 6, these challenges scale to fit every learner.
We’d love to hear how it goes! Did you find a clever strategy? Who’s the reigning champion in your house? Email us your "Maths Moments" or feedback at cspence@spmentone.catholic.edu.au
—we might even feature your family’s strategy in the next issue!
Warm regards,
Charlotte Spence
