Principal's Report

Supporting our children to make their way to and from school safely

It can be easy to assume that our kids make good decisions as they walk, ride, or scoot their way to and from school.  Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.  From time to time, we hear reports of children making their way to or from school in an unsafe manner.  Typically, these relate to children travelling up the middle of roads when a footpath is available (Buninyong is getting too busy for that) or children crossing roads in unsafe locations.

Having said that, we regularly witness lots of students doing the right thing, including using the school crossings and the traffic lights to cross the road safely…that’s what we want to see.

This is a timely reminder for all parents to have a road safety chat at the dinner table.  Please talk to your kids about the best route to and from school and about general road safety.  We’ll be doing the same at school.

Parent Handbooks

Schools are complex places and do our best to give parents every opportunity to understand how things work, so you can feel comfortable, able to support your child and able to get involved as a member of the school community.  To help with this endeavour, we have a Parent Handbook for each campus, which can be accessed through the attached links.

The handbooks cover a wide range of topics and are there as a useful resource across the school year.  The latest version of these documents can always be found on the school website.

As always, whenever you have a question, but can’t find the answer in the handbook or on the website, just give us a call.

Open Mornings

Early each school year we hold 2 Open Mornings at both campuses.  These give prospective families the opportunity to take a tour of the school and see what our school has to offer.  A team of grade 6s (our Transition Team) are the tour guides on these days, which is a job they love.

This year our Open Mornings will be held on Thursday February 26 and Friday March 6 between 9.00am and 1.00pm. Please pass the message on to anyone you know that has a child starting school in 2027.

New Shade Sail Cover for the P-2 Playground

The existing shade sail cover over the P-2 playground was getting very tired and was ripping in different places.  Yesterday a new cover went up, which has certainly improved the look of the front of the school.

Student Accident Insurance Arrangements

The Department of Education and Training (DET) does not provide personal accident insurance cover for students.  Parents also need to understand that we as a school don’t purchase cover for our students.

As such, parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs.

Reasonably low-cost student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers. These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

Bringing Personal Property to School

At this time each year the department asks us to give our parents and students the following reminder.

  • Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This can include mobile phones, iPads, electronic games, toys, musical instruments, sporting equipment, and cars parked on school premises.
  • The Department of Education and Training does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property.
  • This is something we all need to be aware of and heightens the need for us to take the steps needed to keep property as secure as possible.
