Our 2026 SLC
Primary House Captains and SLC
Secondary House Captains and SLC
Hi from the 2026 Secondary SLC
My name is Caitlyn and I have been blessed with the opportunity to be SLC President this year, and I’d love to tell you a bit about what my team and I have been up to in Term 1.
As soon as the year began, we jumped right into things! With the swimming carnival on the seventh day back and The Jubilee Centre Opening Ceremony on the second Saturday, we had a lot of planning and organising to do in two lunchtime meetings. But everything came together smoothly, and our House Captains did an amazing job at encouraging participation and cheering on their teams at the swimming carnival. The free lemonade icy poles were a hit once again!
At The Jubilee Centre Opening Ceremony, I, Caitlyn, personally got to be a ribbon cutter which was an amazing and fun opportunity (even if I did get the dodgy scissors)! A few of the other SLC Execs went around with food platters serving the wider school community, chatting with people and getting our first look at the finished centre. Safe to say, we love it! The foyer and the library offer amazing study spaces for Year 11 & 12 students to use when we don’t have class. In the foyer, there are amazingly comfy green couches which, when walking past, you’ll usually see students in small groups, working on their assignments, or with their shoes off and kicked back! We may be getting a bit too at home with the facility.
The Athletics Carnival was in week four, and we definitely had an early start. While we may have had to be at St Leonards track by 6:30am to help set up, the hot drinks on the staff tab were worth it! We were blessed with a day of lovely weather, great participation and Donnie as Barrow HC took home the win for the first time ever, meaning that Barrow has now won two of the three carnivals this year. We’re looking forward to seeing who will take home the trophy at Cross Country.
This year, Battle of the Houses Coordinator, Wes, has been putting in a lot of work to plan some fun and new activities, including non-sporty activities. He started a logo competition for kids who are more creative in art, where students could design and submit a logo for their house, each submitted logo earning participation points. The winners' designs will be their house logo for the year. For our sporty students, there was a wicket dodgeball tournament in Week 11, a classic!
Worship Afternoon
Our main event for Term 1 was the worship afternoon. Personally, this was a huge highlight, and I loved seeing people come together to worship God. To tell you a bit about it, I’d first like to flashback to the SLC executive leadership retreat we attended in December. It was a fun weekend away, learning leadership skills with the team at Mustard. We were also joined by Leighland Christian School’s student leaders. Aside from bonding time and getting our brains into leadership mode, something that stuck out was on one of the afternoons of this retreat, when Leighland suggested we do an impromptu acoustic worship session. This was the most beautiful time and really got me thinking about how much worship is a part of their school culture. They later shared with us that they run worship afternoons at their school, and during lunchtimes every now and then.
If you couldn’t tell, we got our inspiration from them! Personally, worship is such a large part of my life and one of the main ways I connect with God – through singing and dancing. It has always saddened me that at our school assemblies, there is no atmosphere of worship, during our songs. Teachers sing but is it rare to see a student do so. I thought that starting regular worship afternoons at our school may help to change this culture.
We all come from different backgrounds and denominations – but we serve the same God, and it is a blessing to worship Him. As a team, we all came together and planned a lovely Easter worship afternoon. Bonnie and Donnie ran some games of wicket dodgeball in the gym, letting the students get all their “wiggles out” after a full day of learning. Then we headed over to The Jubilee Centre where bands that Ari and Wes formed, led us in worship. Zac Ferguson, the youth pastor at Door of Hope Christian Church, brought a message on forgiveness. It was an amazing afternoon, and fair to say, we will be putting on another one again, stay tuned!
As we wrap up this term, I would like to leave everyone with a Bible verse from Colossians 3:22-24 which says:
“…with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord ... It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
