Physical Education

Prep – 2 Gymnastics

The first 4 weeks of the term in Physical Education have been focused on gymnastics. This has included balances, gymnastics positions and tumbling.

Basic Elements of Gymnastics covered

  • Balance – learning to hold the body steady in different positions e.g., standing on one foot (such as the star pose, flamingo pose, tree pose, standing pigeon) and balancing on a beam and balance boards.
  • Locomotion (Movement from place to place) – moving the body in different ways, such as running, skipping, hopping, rolling, or jumping.
  • Rotation – turning the body upside down or around, like forward rolls, log rolls, cartwheels, or twists (including a 180 degree and 360 degree jump and turn)
  • Springing – pushing off the ground and equipment such as the springboard or mini trampoline for power, such as in jumps or leaps.
  • Landing – learning how to land safely and in control, with bent knees and balance such as the motor bike landing from an elevated foam structure, mini trampoline or springboard.

Level 3-6 House Athletics Event

For the Level 3- 6 students this term has been primarily focused on the House Athletics Event which was held on August 14th. These events often require students to learn new skills and techniques specific to the athletic event and are generally not transferable to other sports such as the discus, shot put and triple jump. Students have shown great improvement in the techniques required for such events which not only assist in greater distances being achieved but also minimise the risk of injury.

All students who attended the Level 3- 6 House Athletics Event are to be congratulated for their amazing efforts on the day and outstanding behaviour. We are constantly reminded of the students’ capabilities and the day highlights our students wide ranging athletic abilities. A huge thanks to the enthusiastic teachers who supported the students at each event and the 12 East Doncaster Secondary students who assisted with marshalling and measuring of student throws and jumps.

The weather on the day was perfect and allowed them to showcase their skills in front of the many parents who attended.

The winner of the House Cup is yet to be finalised. We were not able to complete all of the hurdles events at the track on the day, so the remainder of the hurdles and high jump will be completed over the next few weeks prior to the District event on September 8th. Stay tuned for more information and details.
