SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION –Year 6
Sacrament of Confirmation:
Term 3 Wk 2 Wednesday 30 July at St. Patrick’s Cathedral at 6pm
Bishop Thinh’s Special Visit to Holy Trinity
Today, Holy Trinity was blessed with a special visit from Bishop Thinh Nguyen, who came to meet with our Year 6 students in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. His visit reminded the candidates of the important step they are about to take on their spiritual journey.
After his introduction, Bishop Thinh shared a presentation with the students that focused on the powerful connection between the Sacrament of Baptism and Confirmation. He explained that Confirmation completes what was begun at Baptism — while Baptism welcomes a person into the Church, Confirmation strengthens and seals them with the gift of the Holy Spirit. At Confirmation, candidates will renew the baptismal promises that were once made on their behalf, now choosing to make them for themselves as a sign of their growing faith and personal commitment to God.
Bishop Thinh also spoke about the important symbols of Baptism and Confirmation:
- Water, which symbolises cleansing and new life in Christ;
- Light, often represented by a candle, reminding us that Jesus is the Light of the World and we are called to shine His light;
- Oil (Chrism), which signifies the sealing of the Holy Spirit
He went on to explain the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, which are given to the candidates to guide and strengthen them in their lives:
- Wisdom, to see the world through God's eyes;
- Understanding, to grasp the deeper meaning of faith;
- Right Judgement (Counsel), to choose what’s right even when it’s hard;
- Courage (Fortitude), to stand up for what is true and just;
- Knowledge, to grow in learning and faith;
- Reverence (Piety), to honour God with love and devotion;
- Wonder and Awe (Fear of the Lord), to be amazed by God's greatness and love.
These gifts are like spiritual tools to help each young person live as a faithful follower of Jesus in today’s world — with love, integrity, and purpose.
Before finishing, Bishop Thinh kindly invited the students to ask questions about the Confirmation ceremony. They appreciated his time and thoughtful answers, and many students said they now feel more confident and excited for this important milestone.
We thank Bishop Thinh for generously taking the time to visit Holy Trinity, especially as he also visited the Confirmation candidates at St Jude’s and St Simon’s today. We are truly grateful for his presence and guidance during this special Sacrament.

2025 Jubilee (Pilgrims of Hope)
What is the 2025 Jubilee?
The term “Jubilee” comes from the Hebrew term “yobel,” which means “ram’s horn.” In Jewish tradition, the sound of the horn marked the beginning of a particular year of remission and forgiveness. The Catholic Church adopted this tradition and made it a year of pilgrimage, prayer, and reconciliation.
What is the History of the Jubilee?
The first Jubilee of the Catholic Church was proclaimed by Pope Boniface VIII in 1300. Since then, the Church has celebrated a Jubilee every 25 years unless the Pope decides to call an extraordinary Jubilee, as Pope Francis did in 2015.
Why is 2025 a Holy Year for the Catholic Church?
The official Vatican website for the Holy Year 2025 — www.iubilaeum2025.va — says, “In 1300, Pope Boniface VIII called the first Jubilee, also known as a ‘Holy Year,’ since it is a time when God’s holiness transforms us.” The Jubilee is a time of forgiveness and reconciliation, with pilgrims worldwide flocking to Rome to celebrate the event. It is also a time of renewal and spiritual awakening, with the Pope and other religious leaders offering prayers, blessings, and ceremonies.
