Home Economics Department Snapshot

The Certificate II Hospitality class finished Semester 1 by making pizzas using leftover ingredients to encompass themes of food sustainability, creativity, collaboration, and time management. These skills are transferable in future lessons, as they will be providing catering for school events.
The Green Apple Café has been very busy serving staff and upper school students coffees and toasties before school and during recess. The Hospitality students are rising to the challenge, demonstrating barista skills, practising point of sale and customer service. The Green Apple Café will be open in Term 3 every recess and before school on Mondays and Wednesdays to serve staff and Year 11 and 12 students.
In Year 11 Food Science and Technology students investigated how food advertisements can influence adolescent food choices. They then produced a burger of their own design and used a selection of food styling techniques to develop a food advertisement appealing to the adolescent market.
The Year 10s in Fashion and Fabrics students have had a very productive semester sewing denim skirts based on their mood board designs, demonstrated their artistic skills by embellishing drawstring bags and sewn an upcycled article to promote and encourage sustainability in the textiles industry.
The Year 8 students in Fabulous Fabrics have been learning how to use the sewing machine safely and creating a denim bookmark to showcase their new skills. They then moved on to their major project, a cushion cover they designed based on their research into the Noongar seasons. Year 8s in Fabulous Foods and Year 9s in Food for the Future are establishing skills in the kitchen to be safe and hygienic, and they are investigating the fundamentals of nutrition to help make positive food choices. Sustainability has been an important theme as students were made aware of the effect that food waste, single use plastics, and packaging have on the environment.
The Home Economics Department would like to wish all our students a positive, productive, and enjoyable term; particularly the Year 12 students as they finish up their studies in Hospitality, Food Science and Technology and Children, Family and the Community.
