Curriculum Matters

Foundation

It’s been a memorable couple of weeks for our Foundation students!

We’ve had so many celebrations including - Milo’s Birthday Party, 100 incredible days of school and the SWPBS reward of a silent disco.

Level 1

Over the past two weeks, our Grade 1 students have had a blast during their gymnastics program!

They've been bouncing on mini tramps, walking and hanging on bars, performing forward rolls, and enjoying all kinds of jumping and tumbling fun.

It's been wonderful to see their confidence and coordination grow.

In Maths, students have been exploring place value using hands-on materials like unifix cubes and MAB blocks to build and read three-digit numbers. We've also begun investigating weight, using balance scales to compare classroom items in fun, practical ways.

Literacy has had a strong focus on writing information reports, with koalas as our topic of interest. Students have also been diving back into their Little Learners Love Literacy program with enthusiasm, building their skills step by step.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), we've been exploring gender norms and stereotypes through lessons from the Respectful Relationships program.

We've also continued our popular Thursday morning team games sessions, with 'Rob the Nest' proving to be a favourite as students work together—and against each other—to collect the most beanbags!

Level 2

In Year 2 this week, students have been learning about review and response writing.

We read The Cat in the Hat by Dr Seuss and wrote our very own Book Worm Reports! Students wrote a short summary of the story and described the setting and characters in detail. They also created colourful “vocabulary crayons” to collect interesting words from the book. To finish off their reports, each student gave the story a 5-star rating to share their opinion.

Our clever bookworms are really turning the page on their learning!

Level 3

Our Level 3 students have officially kicked off their Potato Olympics unit.

Each student has selected their very own athlete potato, and over the coming weeks, they’ll be measuring, comparing and problem-solving their way through a series of events.

From potato gymnastics  to diving  and even weightlifting, students will be applying skills in length, time, and data collection, all while cheering on their potato champions.

Level 4

This term, our Level 4 students have been exploring what respect really means to them. Through thoughtful conversations and shared experiences, they discovered that respect can be shown in many ways – from how we speak to one another in the classroom, to the way we treat others in the yard and throughout our school.

Students reflected on why respect is important and how it helps create a safe, supportive and positive learning environment. They shared how respect feels, what it looks like in action and how even small gestures, a kind word, listening carefully or including someone can make a big difference.

The discussions were powerful and personal, with each student considering what respect means for them. Their reflections highlighted that respect isn’t just about following rules; it’s about showing kindness, valuing others and building strong relationships.

Our Level 4 students are now looking for ways to put their understanding into action every day, making our school a place where everyone feels valued and respected.

Level 5

The Level 5 students have made a fantastic start to Term 3, diving straight into a variety of engaging learning experiences across the curriculum.

In Reading, Writing and Inquiry, students have been exploring the fascinating world of animal adaptations, developing their research and comprehension skills as they discover how different animals survive in their environments.

In Mathematics, students have been strengthening their understanding of factors and multiples, as well as tackling problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions. They’ve shown great perseverance and teamwork as they worked through these challenging concepts.

In Social and Emotional Learning, students have participated in team-building games and engaged in meaningful boy/girl chats, fostering respectful communication and strong peer relationships.

The start of the term also included some exciting celebrations. Students enjoyed marking 100 Days of School with their Foundation buddies, sharing activities that highlighted their growth and achievements.

To top it off, everyone had a blast at the Silent Disco, dancing and laughing together in a fun and energetic atmosphere.

It has been a vibrant and productive start to the term, and we look forward to the many learning adventures still to come!

Level 6

On the 3rd of July 50 of the level six students went to the snow for the day.

We had to get to the school by 5:30am to leave the school by 6:00. When we were going up the mountain we saw small piles of snow as we went further up the piles got bigger until we got to the top. When we got there we got our skis, boots and helmets. Some people also got jackets and pants. Once we got into our groups we went off to learn, I was in a group with more experienced skiers since I went skiing in grade four. In my group we just refreshed how to ski as some of us hadn’t gone since they were 3. Once we did that we went up half way on Burke Street and skied back down. Then we had lunch but it took about an hour to get through the line. Before we returned our skis we had some free time on the slope, some people had snow play but my group and another group went to the top of Burke Street to ski down. Then we returned our ski stuff to go back to the school. We got on the bus around 4:00pm. When we got to the pub where we had dinner, the food was amazing and I had a chicken parma. After dinner we got back on the bus to go back to school. After a long drive with a couple of detours we got back to school at 9:10pm where our parents picked us up.                                                                                                       Tiarna 6V

While some students went to Mount Buller for snow day, the rest of us spent the day at school having fun as well.

After we arrived at school we all went to 6T because there were only about 30 kids at school, so we did the roll and played celebrity heads. We then went to the year 4 Inquiry Showcase, looking at all of their projects. Some had powerpoints, while others games and Blookets (a type of quiz) where you could win fun prizes like stickers or stamps. When we went back to class we finished up the game of celebrity heads and I finally guessed mine, it was Bluey, and when everyone guessed theirs, we played Gaga ball, card games, and also if you brought a nintendo switch you could play on that, we did that until recess. When we came back inside we all got comfy and watched Cool Runnings while sipping hot chocolate and eating popcorn. The movie was about a team of Jamaican bobsleeders and their journey to the Olympics. Then we had lunch. After lunch we had some free time, where me and my friends did some colouring/crafts, until the bell rang and we went home.                                                                                                                                                          Catherine 6V

The day was overall a great experience, but some of my favourite things were skiing, the bus rides and the snow play.

These activities bringed me joy throughout the day of fun and snow! The food was also great and it was nice to hang out with all my friends and the teachers. I think everyone had a great time and I had so much fun.

Although not everyone came, everyone had an enjoyable time either way!                                                                                                                                                                Scarlet 6P
