Year 8 Humanoid Robot Challenges
Over the last few lessons, 8TM2 have been using Humanoid Robots to complete challenges.
Firstly, students had a Dance Off, well the Robots had the Dance Off! Secondly, students were challenged to Sumo where the students had to get their Robots to keep within the field but eliminate their opposition. Thirdly, students were challenge with Robot Wars.
Again, it was a close competition this rotation. Two of the four teams both achieved 38 points with the other two teams very close behind.
Students were asked to make some comments about what they had just completed. This was to start them thinking about the Humanoid Robots that they used and what advantages and disadvantages that they had.
“I liked the Robot Wars and Sumo. It was relatively simple to figure out the controls, but I noticed some issues. When I was far away it stopped working and I forgot which one but one of the turning buttons didn’t work. But overall, it was fun!”
“I liked the Robot War. I didn’t like that the Robot we used only moved a small amount forward instead of just being able to hold the button down and to make it move continuously forward.”
“I enjoyed the Robots. Issues I found were it took a while to move because it had to give instructions first. I liked the Robot War when all four teams were challenged together. It may have worked better or differently on a different surface, lino instead of carpet.”
“The Robots are slow reacting, and we made them fight. My favourite was Sumo.”
Next, the students will be developing understanding of how to control an Edison Robot using the EdPy coding language. Once they have completed a preliminary task, they will then have to complete some coding challenges.
