Differentiated Teaching in Action

At APS, we understand that every child is unique, with their own strengths, interests, and ways of learning. That’s why we place a strong focus on differentiated learning in all our classrooms.

We foster differentiation in many ways, including:

1. Flexible Grouping

Students are grouped in different ways depending on the activity sometimes by ability, sometimes by interest, or even randomly to encourage collaboration and new thinking. These groups change regularly to keep learning dynamic.

2. Varied Tasks and Levels of Challenge

We often provide a selection of tasks designed to stretch each student appropriately. For example, in a writing lesson, one student may focus on building full sentences, while another develops paragraphs with advanced vocabulary.

3. Choice and Voice

We offer students choices in how they demonstrate their learning – through drawing, writing, speaking, or hands-on projects. This helps them feel more engaged and take ownership of their learning.

4. One-on-One and Small Group Support

Teachers and support staff provide extra help to those who need it, and also extend learning for those ready for the next challenge. This might look like a Guided Reading group, a maths extension activity, or a writing conference with a teacher.

5. Learning Adjustments

For students with additional learning needs, we work closely with families, specialists, and support staff to make sure each child has the right tools, adjustments, and opportunities to thrive.

Why It Matters

When students know their learning is personalised and their progress is understood and valued, they are more engaged, confident, and motivated to succeed. Differentiated teaching ensures that every student is given the opportunity to thrive.

Kind Regards,

The Inclusion Team.
