The Earth is grumbling with 41 earthquakes around the world in the past few days. A massive earthquake of magnitude 8.8 was recorded on our Marian seismometer where tectonic plates near Russia at a fault zone released their massive pent up energy. A Tsunami was expected to impact the places around the earthquake area in the NorthPacific Ocean, luckily the waves were smaller than predicted

The Year 9 students have started their study of the materials in the Earth. They started by examining many minerals found in the Earth that we mine and use in our everyday lives. They will appreciate the resources that the earth gives us and understand the impact on the environment and other living things.
The Year 8 students are delving into the brilliance of our body systems. They are looking at the digestive system and the wonderful interaction with the respirative and circulatory systems.
Year 7 students are working on grouping the millions of living organisms that we share the Earth and its resources with and this is a giant task. Students will be having some fun looking at characteristics and seeing how they can be classified.
Year 10 students have started their investigation of chemical reactions. They are developing the skills of putting chemicals together and predicting what the products will be. This is an essential study if they wish to study Chemistry at the senior level. I am very grateful to Mr Kulkarni and Mrs Morrison, who attended the Year 10 information night on Thursday, to inform students about the areas of study in Science for the senior years.
The senior students are working very hard preparing for their exams this term. The Year 12 students start their trials next week. These students have worked hard and so it is time to show us exactly what they know and can do. We wish them all the very best and we pray that the questions are just what they want.
Year 11 students will do their preliminary exams in mid September so they are completing courses and preparing for exams over the following weeks.
On a sad note, we farewell our lab assistant, Mrs Tori McIntosh. She has been working quietly behind the scenes, preparing all the practicals that students have enjoyed, for many years. We wish her all the very best as she enjoys her retirement.
