Deputy Principal

Robyn Buchanan-Hodgson - Deputy Principal Year 10

We have much to celebrate at this time of year. Schools are busy places, and our staff and students are highly engaged in teaching, learning and growing. The holidays are a welcome opportunity to recharge and rest now that major assessments are over.

Our enrolments team is in full swing with interviews and offers have now been sent for students interested in our programs of excellence. These programs include AMPed(accelerated music), EVP (volleyball), German Immersion, and Academic Honours. Congratulations to anyone who has received an offer to attend The Gap SHS in 2026.

Our final camp for Semester 1 is currently underway – Year 11s are either camping or at work experience this week.

Thank you to the teaching team who support our camp program, and the amazing growth and development opportunities it provides our students. We have a group surfing at Lennox Head, two groups doing sea kayaking around Bribie Island or Stradbroke Island; a group doing art and yoga at Wild Mountains Art Retreat, and a group at Kiah Park learning to ride horses. All of these experiences are made possible by a dedicated team of staff, and an amazing group of students and families who embrace these opportunities.

Our next round of reports will be soon arriving; we applaud students who have worked very diligently across the semester.  If your young person is seeking a subject change for next semester, there is a process to follow. Information about subject changes has been emailed to students and families, and once received, these are reviewed. Changes will be reflected in a new timetable, emailed to each student.

Term 3 will bring a new wave of events and here is a quick snapshot:

Subject Information Evening (Years 8, 9, 10 in 2026) will be held on Thursday 17th July which is the first week of Term 3. This is an important event for students and parents/carers as information is readily accessible across all faculties. Put this event in your calendar and attend with your young people; emails with all of the details have already been sent to families.

School-led Review: this is an integral part of quality teaching and learning; our school has been actively engaged across Semester 1 in an internal audit process. The validation team will visit in Week 2 and plans to meet with as many teachers and program leaders as possible. The evaluation report is ready to go, the result of consultation with staff, and the leadership of Mrs Speers and the teachers in our internal evaluation team.

Our annual athletics carnival will take place in Week 2; an opportunity to compete and contribute to our school house culture. Staff are now vying for the ‘best dressed’ in each house, so we anticipate some hot competition on the track and in the field.

We welcome our newest student leaders who pick up their roles in full for the next ‘financial’ year. Thank you to our retiring  junior and senior captains who have served as excellent role models and will leave the portfolios in top shape.

Looking forward to the winter holidays! This weather provides us with excuses to have treats like hot chocolate, marshmallows, and slow cooked dinners. Maybe that’s just me! I hope you have a restful and fun holiday and we will see everyone back in Term 3.
