In Week 10 of Term 2, our Year 9 Chinese students embarked on an exciting excursion to Sunnybank, where they immersed themselves in a vibrant and authentic Chinese cultural environment that brought their classroom learning to life.
The day kicked off with an interactive challenge that had students exploring the shopping centre to identify Chinese characters on signs, banners, and shopfronts. This real-world application of their language skills helped reinforce their understanding of written Mandarin in a fun and meaningful way.
Students then put their speaking skills to the test by engaging in short interviews with native Chinese speakers. Using sentence structures and vocabulary learned in class, they confidently initiated conversations with shopkeepers and passers-by, gaining invaluable experience in using Mandarin in authentic contexts.
One of the highlights of the day was the delicious Chinese food experience at a local restaurant. From handmade dumplings to stir-fried specialties, students sampled a variety of traditional dishes, learning not only about Chinese cuisine but also dining customs and etiquette.
Throughout the excursion, students were encouraged to make connections between what they had learned in class and what they observed and experienced in the community. This hands-on opportunity strengthened their confidence in using Mandarin while deepening their appreciation of Chinese culture.
The excursion was a fantastic success-filled with language practice, cultural discovery, and plenty of enthusiasm. We are proud of our students’ engagement and willingness to embrace new experiences, and we look forward to offering more opportunities that inspire global awareness and a love for languages.
