Education Perfect Victorian Languages Championships

This competition started on Monday and runs until 5pm on Sunday 3 August. Hopefully all German and Indonesian students are aiming to each get 500 points!

Oberon is coming second in this competition, however some schools are sneaking up on our scores. We are coming first for German and second for Indonesian but it is close! Please put a big effort in until Sunday at 5pm! We can do this with everyone's help.

7H's Adventures Around the World

Did you know that 22% of people in Australia speak a language other than English at home? 7H had the opportunity to explore cultural and linguistic diversity last term as part of their German classes. We talked about what diversity means to us, and the variety of cultural backgrounds we have in our class - our families come from over 10 different countries! Then we set off on an adventure around the world, by researching and presenting information on various countries including those that speak German, as well as those that we have a personal connection to, such as India, South Africa, Bosnia, Spain, and New Zealand. The highlight was our last lesson of the term, when we came together to share what we had learnt, to collect stamps in our passports, and to share some food from our countries with our classmates.

United Nations Model German Conference – Thursday 24 July in Melbourne

Eleven Year 11 and 12 students, along with Frau Nash and Frau Ray, attended this United Nations German Conference. The topic was Zero Hunger and we had three teams to represent:

USA – Josh Rachor, Riley Drever, Shia Tarac and Xavier Galang

Morocco – Darby Doherty, Sarah Watson, Abbey Roulstone and Chloe Rookes

Guatemala – Samuella Asade, Aliyah Tapster and Johna Tessmer

All students spoke extremely well in German to present their country’s position statement, then went on to debate amendments in caucus meetings.

All three teams had at least one of their amendments passed. Overall a great day for the students and a wonderful chance for them to improve their language and public speaking skills

German Restaurant visit – second last week of Term 2

The remaining three German classes, (one Year 10 and two Year 9), attended the Bierhaus restaurant in Geelong for a delicious traditional German lunch. The students had a great time sampling food which maybe they had never eaten before such as Kartoffelsalat, Sauerkraut, Käsespätzle and Apfelstrudel. The soft drinks were also German – Spezi, Mineralwasser, Cola! The waiters are all from Germany and with students required to place their order in German, it was a wonderful opportunity to practise their language skills outside of the classroom.
