Beans in general have been used as a food crop and grown to improve the nitrogen content of the soil. Nitrogen is required by all plants for the growth of leaves. It does this by letting beneficial micro-organisms grow along the roots. This week’s seed of the week is Dwarf beans, they prefer full sun and well-drained soil. They require regular watering especially during and after flowering for the bean pod to develop. The beans will take about one school term to develop and be ready for harvesting. There is a useful tip; frequent harvesting encourages more bean pods to develop.
Infant Garden Club members have been collecting sticks and twigs for Bug Hotels. These are places for insect pollinators to rest and seek shelter during high rainfall and wind. We have several buckets without handles because they have broken off during watering the crops and instead of discarding them, we can convert some into Bug Hotels and some into smaller pots to grow smaller plants.
We will use other building material for the Bug Hotels, these will include paper and cardboard that are frequently collected for recycling. If you have sticks in your yard or happen to know where some sticks are, we are accepting sticks.
If for whatever reason you’re not able to attend Garden Club but would like to help, we are looking for volunteers to collect sticks, Lady Birds, more compost for the worm farms and discarded packaging to make useful things for Garden Club.
We know there are children who would like to join, however arrival times to school are just right before the start of lessons. Please feel free to chat to me, Mr Choong at the playground.
Currently Garden Club happens on Tuesday and Thursday morning, after the gates are open. We meet at the bubblers on the Churchill Avenue side of the school.
There is also Garden Club for Stage 3 on Friday, who are completing the Pope Francis Award. This is a priority for Stage 3; however, anyone is welcome to join if there are extra jobs.
Garden Club is FREE to join. Learn to be a lateral thinker with limited resources. Enjoy first pick after harvest and see fascinating creatures.
