YEAR 10-12 NEWS

Year 10:
Year 10 Outdoor Recreation 2/6
On Monday 2nd June, the Year 10 Outdoor Recreation students took part in an exciting mountain biking trip out at the You Yangs — and they were brilliant. Tackling challenging trails with energy, enthusiasm and a great sense of teamwork, our students demonstrated resilience, courage, and plenty of skill along the way.
Staff on the trip were particularly impressed with the way everyone supported each other, showing maturity and a genuine team spirit throughout the day. Whether powering up steep climbs or navigating tricky descents, each rider gave their best and made the most of the experience.
Not only was it a fantastic day of outdoor adventure, but our students also represented the school brilliantly. Their behaviour, attitude, and determination were a credit to themselves and our school community.
Well done to everyone involved!
Year 10 Art
This week students have been working on their John Brack inspired self-portraits, that will form part of a collaborative work between the two year 10 art classes. Check out some of their work in progress!
Year 12:
Year 12 Orienteering
Year 12 VM students had such a fantastic day out at Woodlands Greenvale to participate in a beginner orienteering course to support the numeracy outcome ‘Problem Solving Cycle in Recreational Numeracy’. The purpose of the activity was to learn how to use a compass and navigate around the bush and find landmarks until you reach the finish line.
Heading into a big week in the blue building with the GAT and semester 1 exams. A reminder that all students doing a unit 3/4 subject will be doing the GAT next Tuesday.
Year 11 classes will be as normal – just in a different room.
All students should be aware of the expectations and requirements of the exams, and it has been really pleasing to watch the students throughout the blue building preparing for SAC’s and the exams. If in doubt – ask!
I have attached some pictures of the work that the students have been doing around the college to help prepare for these assessments – which as you can see not only takes a bit of work but also identifies the dedication to their studies.
With that on board, the stress levels of the students have increased considerably with the ending of semester one. The advice I give the students is to:
- Write down a to-do list and then identify the priorities of what needs to be done.
- Take one little “bite” at a time – if there is a lot of work to do – spread it out and don’t think about all at once.
- Talk to teachers about the stress levels – we have been through this many times and we all have great advice!
Do some mindfulness or exercise – just to take your mind off the tasks for 20 minutes to allow you to refocus
Year 12 Art Making and Exhibiting
Year 12 student Sienna Pupavac has been busy in the YART studio finalising her Unit 3 artworks due this week. Sienna attended the Senior Years Art Enrichment Tour to Bundanon in NSW and was inspired by the landscape surrounding the Shoalhaven River and has used this location as the subject matter for her landscape paintings. Here are two images of Sienna's painting in progress this week, she is working on the final touches!
Just a reminder that we have a big couple of weeks in VCE coming up:
Mid-year practice exams from Tuesday July 18th onwards and the GAT on July 17th for all students in year 12 (and any year 11’s doing a unit 3/4 subject). We will be holding an assembly closer to the date to ensure the students are aware of the processes and expectations around these assessments. Pass GAT’s are available online on the VCAA website.
Students should be aware that a scientific calculator can be taken into both parts of the exam, but the Ti-nspire graphics calculator is not allowed. The school has a very limited supply of these calculators, so it may be best to purchase one soon to ensure one is available.
Exams also end unit 3 classes, so more than likely we will also see an increase in SAC’s over the next couple of weeks, so I would be expecting that a little bit of anxiety and stress might start to creep in. My best advice is to set up a timetable and spread the load over several nights, not just the night before.
Also, with an increase in colds and flu in and around town, it’s a timely reminder that if a SAC is missed due to illness, a Doctor’s Certificate is required.
