Pathways & Careers Report

Brennan Deppeler

The past few weeks in Pathways and Careers have been quite busy. We took 38 Year 8 female students to the Trade and Tech Fit Expo in Melbourne. Additionally, 90% of our Year 9 students have completed the Morrisby career profiling. We are also receiving an increasing amount of paperwork from our Year 10 students in preparation for the upcoming work experience.

The Trade & Tech Fit is Victoria’s largest hands-on career expo, exclusively for female and gender-diverse individuals. It showcases study and employment opportunities in traditionally male-dominated industries. We had a large majority of our Year 8 cohort travel by bus to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre for a day of career exploration. It was fantastic to see Woodmans Hill Secondary College students engaging in a wide range of different trade and technology activities, from making stools and using virtual reality to participating in physical testing for the police force.

The Morrisby profiling has been completed by our Year 9 students, which will help guide them in selecting their pathways for Year 10, whether choosing the Year 10 VCE stream or the Year 10 VCE Vocational Major stream. This is also preparation for the Morrisby interviews conducted by a Morrisby professional later in Term 3. Some exciting potential careers suggested to our Year 9 students included: Naval Architect, Film Director, Hotel Receptionist, Accounts Clerk and even a politician.

Our Year 10 cohort is about to embark on their work experience. Some students have completed the paperwork and are eagerly awaiting the experience, which starts on Monday June 23rd, while others are finalizing the process. If you have a Year 10 student at home, we encourage you to talk to them about work experience, as it can be a truly life-changing opportunity that helps students understand what working life is like. Please ensure that if you haven't returned the work experience forms, you visit the Pathways office so we can assist you with this.
