Supporting Student Wellbeing Through Mental Health Education
This term in Year 8 Health, students have been engaging in a vital and thoughtfully designed unit exploring the topic of Mental Health. The focus has been on helping students develop a deeper understanding of mental health and mental illness, along with building skills to support their own wellbeing and that of others.
Throughout the unit, students have explored the mental health continuum, learning that mental health exists on a spectrum and can fluctuate over time. They’ve investigated the internal and externalfactors that influence mental health, from personal habits and emotional regulation to the impacts of family, friendships, school, and broader social influences.
Lessons have also tackled the important distinction between mental health and mental illness, equipping students with the knowledge to identify signs when someone may be struggling and understanding the importance of early support. Through activities such as the “traffic light” system and real-world scenarios, students practised identifying signs of mental distress and responding with healthy coping strategies.
A key component of the unit was the emphasis on help-seeking behaviours. Students examined a range of community and online support services, including Kids Helpline and local mental health organisations, helping them understand where to go and who to talk to when support is needed.
Importantly, students considered the influence of stigma, media, and cultural perspectives on mental health, fostering empathy and inclusivity. By exploring these themes in a safe and supportive environment, students were encouraged to challenge stereotypes and normalise conversations about mental wellbeing.
Teachers have reported strong engagement across the cohort, with students demonstrating curiosity, reflection, and maturity when discussing sometimes sensitive topics. The lessons have sparked important conversations and provided strategies that students can carry with them beyond the classroom.
Students are about to commence their learning task where they will evaluate emotional responses, identify internal and external influences of wellbeing, and apply a range of coping strategies and protective behaviours through different case studies. They will also examine how cultural beliefs, social norms, and public messaging can impact an individual’s decision to seek support.
