In the classroom...

Students have been learning about Solfege (Do Re Mi) in the classroom. Solfege is a system developed to help students in Music develop pitch accuracy, sight-reading and ear training. Students have learnt the solfege scale and its corresponding hand signs, and have used instruments such as Resonator Bells and Boomwhackers to consolidate their learning of the solfege pitches.  They are also learning the song "Do Re Mi" from the Sound of Music, and have played Solfege related games such as Solfege Bingo.

Junior school students are working on memorising the solfege scale with its corresponding hand signs, and senior school students will start practicing the skill to sing and sight-sing songs using solfege.

Here are some resources available for your child to practice Solfege at home:

1. Solfege Hand Sign Poster

2. Solfege Sing Along

3. Do Re Mi Song

National Songwriting Competition

Entries are open for the Australian Children's Music Foundation (ACMF) 2025 National songwriting competition! This competition is a great opportunity for students to be creative and to showcase their songs to an audience. I will be talking to students during Performing Arts lessons about the competition, but please discuss the competition with your child at home if you think your child will be interested.

Please see relevant information including prizes, past winners and terms and conditions about the competition in this link: https://acmf.com.au/national-songwriting-competition/

If your child is interested in participating, please email the following to zoe.tsai@education.vic.gov.au by 9th September 2025:

  • A pdf file of your child's song lyrics
  • A mp3 or m4a file of your child's song recording
  • Your child's full name and year level
  • Your child's birthday

Please note that if you do not send these to me before the 9th of September, you will have to enrol your child into the competition yourself before the 15th of September.
