This Fortnight In Literacy and Integrated Studies
Our Term 3 Whole School Concept is Social Justice. In Team 5/6, our unit it titled Call to Action, and aims to explore the following essential questions:
How can we call others to act to help solve big problems? |
What are some big problems facing children around the world? |
Who helps children around the world? |
We have begun the unit by exploring the concept of Social Justice, thinking about the difference between a privilege and a right and the rights we think every child should have.
This term, we will be exploring poetry and have begun a unit of work focused on the text Limelight by Solli Raphael. Limelight is a special book filled with slam poetry and fun writing tips. It has over 30 original poems in different styles. Solli’s poems talk about important issues like looking after the planet and making sure everyone is treated fairly. But most of all, his poems share a message of hope and positivity. The book also has chapters that explain different types of poetry, how slam poetry works, and helpful ideas for writing and performing your own poems. Solli even shares his own experiences, including his top 10 tips for beating writer’s block. As a young poet and performer, Solli shows that kids and teens can use their voices to make the world a better place. Limelight is a great read for anyone who wants to get creative, speak up, and be inspired!
Numeracy
By Zavier and Deborah in 6S
To begin this term of numeracy, students have been learning about patterns. So far, they have explored both number patterns and geometrical patterns. To help them learn more about this topic, Grade 6 students have been working on the Sticky Triangles Problem. This problem involves terms where triangles made from popsicle sticks are stacked to form a tower. Students were asked to look at the growing terms and figure out the rules. They didn’t just look at the triangles they also examined the number of sticks used. After answering questions about the terms, students were challenged to create their own patterns. They are continuing to explore this topic and can’t wait to learn more.

Leadership and KGT
By Matilda and Daniel 6SB
It’s been a busy and productive start to Leadership this term! Our Wellbeing Pillar continued their work in the Foundation to Year 2 classrooms, with several students also helping to run our very first Storytime session for local Kindergarten children.
The Arts and Library and Languages Pillar were hard at work planning an upcoming Care, Learn and Share activity, while also packing down and tidying our stunning Visual Arts displays from last term.
Meanwhile, the Health Pillar has been busy preparing for Term 3 Team 5/6 Sport, and the Environment Pillar continued their work with the Grade 5s during KGT.
The Admin Pillar were responsible for creating this very page you’re reading now - well done to them!
Finally, several of our leaders are currently preparing a NAIDOC Week presentation, which will be shared at our next assembly. We’re proud of how our student leaders are embracing their roles and contributing in so many meaningful ways.
As part of KGT this week we joined an on-line presentation called Poem Forest. In this Presentation we were guided through the process of writing a poem linking to our senses and the outdoors. We hope to share some of these poems soon.
The students also prepared for the new KGT group called Garden Audit and Pancakes (GAP). As part of this the students decided who would be in which group making sure that they factor in the chance for everybody to cook pancakes. Other students prepared a creative activity for next week. Each group of students prepared a little booklet for their team which will show all the tasks needed for the following week. Overall the students did an excellent job preparing for KGT for the term and we look forward to giving you regular update
