Digital Technology Update

Juniors

For the last part of this term, the junior students have been learning about digital devices in more detail.

They have been learning about cyber safety, network systems and how the internet works as well as logging into the Chromebooks and practicing mouse skills, such as moving and clicking the mouse, scrolling down a screen as well as drag and drop.

To see more of their learning, please come and have a look at the display in the hallway that leads to the school gym.

Seniors

The seniors have been learning about data. Using Google Forms they created a questionnaire to collect data on their chosen topic. They then put this information into a Google Sheet and then converted it into a digital graph to make it easier to interpret and analyse.

To end the term, they have been using Minecraft Education to create a new community. In their build they needed to ensure they had included a school, medical facility, a way to get produce and a place for the community to gather. This work is also on display in the hallway that leads to the gym.

Music at SFS - The SFS School Band

The SFS School Band has been growing in popularity and presence across the school, with enthusiastic Senior students bringing music to life through Music.

What began in Semester 1 as an exploration of chords on the Ukulele and Keyboard quickly grew into something more. Several students have demonstrated a keen interest in developing their skills further, leading to the creation of a school band. Since then, the band has grown into a part of our Performing Arts Program.

Some students participate in the band on a rotational basis, allowing a wide range of students to be involved. Kingston plays the Electric Guitar, Jeremy plays the Electric Bass and Curtis plays the Keys consistently. With many students self-taught on their chosen instruments, the band is a wonderful reflection of student initiative. From Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Keys and Ukuleles to vocals and Percussion, every performance highlights the unique talents within our school.

The band has already performed twice at assembly, receiving fantastic praise for their energy, teamwork, confidence and just how good they sound! Rehearsals often happen during lunchtime, where students take the lead—sharing ideas, practising parts, and supporting one another as they prepare for upcoming performances.

We are so proud of what the SFS School Band has achieved so far and are excited to see how they continue to grow.

Student Wellbeing and Performing Arts

As part of our learning about expression through dance, our Senior students watched and responded to a professional performance. They explored how dancers use movement, structure, and space to tell a story or express an emotion.

Students looked closely at how the elements of dance, such as space, time, energy, and body were used in the performance, and how these helped to communicate meaning. They discussed what emotions or messages they thought the dance was trying to show and explained their thinking using dance vocabulary.

They also reflected on the importance of safe dance practices like body control, awareness of others, and warming up properly and why these are important for all performers. This task helped build their observation, interpretation, and communication skills, while deepening their understanding of how dance can be a powerful way to express ideas and connect with others.

Visual Art

The seniors have been using the slab technique with Model Magic Clay to create containers and vessels that reflect their family connections. They designed imagery that represented special meaning for them and their family and used low relief to add these to their construction.

Juniors listened to the inspirational story The Dot by Peter J Reynolds and learned about Vashti who didn’t believe she could draw.

She started with a dot and, encouraged by her Art Teacher, these quickly became masterpieces in her school hallways.

The students at SFS have explored colour combinations and painted their own dot with the inner circle representing themselves. The next colour they chose to paint for their next concentric circle represented their family, then their school, larger community, Australia, the world and finally the universe in the outer circle.

Using the art element of Line students drew around their mounted Dot using metallic pastels to create a decorative frame.

Finally our Art Club students have been super busy preparing props and backdrops for the upcoming SFS school production The Wizard of Oz in Term 4. There has been great excitement as students have seen these come to life. I hope to see you there!!

Learning Space 3 Senior & Junior News –

 Saints in Action!

This term, our Seniors have taken on the role of mentors, teaming up with our Juniors to dive into the life and mission of our incredible Saint explored this term– Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

Together, the Juniors and Seniors explored her early life in Albania, where young Teresa first felt the call to serve. Our children were fascinated to learn how, with courage and deep faith, she left behind everything familiar – her home, family, and comforts – and travelled all the way to India. It was there that she truly lived out her mission: caring for the poorest of the poor with compassion, dignity, and love.

Through storytelling, reflection, and hands-on activities, students unpacked how Saint Teresa’s journey reflected continuity – the way her values shaped every step of her path. Her story showed us that even in a changing world, staying true to your calling can make a lasting impact.

Discuss with your child how they would carry on her mission today – you might be surprised by the wisdom they share!

BOOK BASH

PRESENTED BY THE STATE LIBRARY VICTORIA!!

This week the senior students has the opportunity to participate in a writing workshop with some of the country’s biggest authors, streamed live to schools.

On Tuesday, writing legend and artist Anh Do (WeirdoSmarty PupNinja KidWolf Girl) shared his storytelling secrets with the children.

On Wednesday, Australian Children's Laureate Sally Rippin (Billie B BrownSchool of MonstersHey Jack) took the children through an exploration of how to bring their characters to life. Both authors shared some amazing tips with the children which they can transfer into their story writing next semester.

It was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn from these two spectacular Australian authors and one which was enjoyed by all.

This week we did something different writing. We had a ZOOM meeting with Anh Do and Sally Rippin.

It was exciting and amusing to watch. We enjoyed listening to them speak about how they became authors. They spoke about how they became authors and where they get their inspiration from.

I loved seeing the authors and doing the fun and entertaining activities they planned for us. They planned activities like drawing and creating our own character. I especially enjoyed that I got to see authors of books that I knew and loved. It was fun to meet them and listen to their speeches.                                                                                          ~  Rania

I loved learning how Sally Rippin made her books with other illustrators and drawing the characters from School Of Monsters.                                                                        ~  Alek

After watching both authors on ZOOM, Sally Rippin taught us how to  make a drawing of a monster. We did a drawing about our own superhero. We wrote all the special abilities it would have had in our imagination. I had a lot of fun during this experience.            ~  Eli

I loved how they explained to us where they get their ideas from. They even get some of their ideas from their children or family and what they do in their normal lives. It was great to hear how they create their story.                                                                                        ~  Gavin S

JUNIOR SPORTS

GOLF

A big thank you to Golf Australia and DS Sports for enabling us to provide the Juniors with the opportunity to experience golf this term.

For those students who loved the game and want to continue learning and playing, it's incredibly important that they have the opportunity to do so outside of the school setting.

To help with this Golf Australia has created a custom brochure for SFS that includes a link and QR code to our geographically nearest active MyGolf Centre. These local programs are running either during the upcoming July school holidays or in Term 3, and they’re a great next step for students eager to keep developing their golf skills.

LEAGUE STARS AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The students once again had a fantastic time at their fourth League Stars After School Program. Students have one more Wednesday Clinic. A reminder to parents that students registered in the League Stars Program can wear their sports uniform to school on Wednesday.

Parents when picking up your child please ensure you enter and exit the school grounds via the pedestrian gate near the front of the school in front of the rainbow playground.

CASEY BASKETBALL CLINICS

Unfortunately, the coach from Casey Basketball was unable to attend last Friday to run our clinics. These have now been rescheduled to this coming Monday. Grade 3/4 students and LS2 Juniors will now have their basketball clinics on Monday. Parents please ensure your child is wearing their sports uniform.

We would like to thank the Casey Basketball Association for this opportunity. If your child enjoys the session, you can continue their basketball experience by joining Casey Basketball. There is a flyer attached in the community section of the newsletter with more information.

ST JOHN AMBULANCE FIRST AID IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM

What a great session the students had on Monday. They learnt various skills at each level based on the DRSABCD (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation) Action Plan for First Aid.

Students, I am sure, will now be more confident in an emergency situation, knowing how to respond. I am pleased to also inform you that the instructors were impressed with both our students and staff. SFS was one of the better schools they have attended.

SOCCER FUN DAY

On the last day of term students will be involved in the Soccer Fun Day. Seniors will participate in House soccer matches and Juniors in soccer rotational activities. We will hopefully have our traditional Staff/Parents vs Gr 6 soccer match as well. If you would like to join the team please let me know.

We ask students to wear their sports uniform with their soccer top or they can wear their soccer team’s colours. If students do not support a specific soccer team they can wear green and gold to represent the Australian colours or the House Coloured top with their sports uniform. Parents please acknowledge the soccer fun day activities via Operoo.

SFS AFTER SCHOOL AUSKICK TERM 3

I am very excited to announce that SFS will be having their own Auskick Program running on our oval next term beginning in Week 5 on Wednesday August 20th from 3.20pm – 4.20pm.

Tyler is happy to run a separate group for the girls if we have enough enrolments.

There will be 5 sessions and the cost will be $55. Like last year students who enrol will also receive a pack sent to their home.

If you would like your child to attend, please use the QR Code on the flyer to register your child.

I will also send information via Operoo but remember confirming Operoo does not register your child. You need to register your child with AFL for them to be involved.

Any queries please don’t hesitate to contact me.
