Grade 1 & 2

Term 3, Week 10

And that’s a wrap on Term 3 2023! We have had a really solid term of learning and are slowly starting to gear up for the end of the year.

A lot of our learning in Year 1/2 this term was underpinned by our History Integrated unit “what’s our story?”.

Students have loved learning about the olden days and we have incorporated a range of hands-on learning including a Ripponlea Estate incursion and community walks around BPS and Blackburn.

In Literacy, we have had a focus on learning how to write information reports. We have particularly focused on how to structure an information report, group like facts and write using paragraphs.

During Reading we have continued to develop our comprehension strategies as well as focusing on retells, identifying text features and developing vocabulary. We have also incorporated some reader’s theatre which students loved and has helped develop fluency and confidence.

In Maths, we completed a solid unit on multiplication and division while touching on various other areas such as money, chance & probability and measurement. Students have been continuing to develop their problem solving and reasoning skills through our “challenging tasks” and our regular open ended tasks. We have loved watching students become more confident with their strategies and using manipulatives.

To celebrate a range of learning this term we are holding a “Step Back In Time” open classroom afternoon tomorrow, Thursday 14th September. We have encouraged students to invite any of their “special people” to also attend. Please arrive at your child’s classroom from 2:45pm. There will be plenty of activities around the junior building for you to enjoy with your child. Students are also invited to dress up in “olden days” clothes!

Once again we would like to thank all of the parent helpers that have volunteered over the term as well as all the parent support for our programs.

Remaining Important Dates for Term 3

14th September - “Step Back In Time” open classrooms (special people invited from 2:45pm onwards)

15th September - Last Day of Term 3 (2:30pm finish)

Looking Ahead to Term 4

  • Our Integrated unit next term will be “How Are We Connected?”. This will be a geography unit where we will build on our learning from Term 2 and focus on Indigenous perspective and the significance of their connection to land and Country
  • We will discuss the value of places to people and the different ways places can be cared for
  • Our maths learning for next term will also heavily be influenced by the geography curriculum and incorporate learning around location, distance, data and interpretation of data
  • As always, Term 4 is always a busy term so please ensure your child’s classroom teacher is kept up to date with any relevant important information and you are across school communication (Compass, newsletters etc)! We appreciate it!

Thank you again for all of your support and we hope you all have a lovely and safe holiday break!Year 1/2 Team
