Term 3, Week 10

What an amazing Term 3 we have had!

Week 1 began with lots of excitement with our Fairytale Incursion! We celebrated 100 Days of School, enjoyed Book Fun Day, our School Disco and the list goes on. We have been immersed in our Fairytale unit and seen some wonderful creative designs of work in STEM. Our students have been solving different Fairy tale problems in our STEM sessions.

Who wouldn’t want to design, create and test a watercraft suitable to carry the Gingerbread Man to safety from the sneaky Dingo? Lots of fun was had by everyone!

Literacy

Our focus in Reading has been interpreting various Fairytale mentor texts with an Australian twist. Our students have continued to develop decoding strategies and fluency. We have been using sticky notes to track our thinking whilst we read. Tracking our thinking whilst we read is an important part of comprehension. We use the sticky note thinking to help us with understanding the important part of the text eg. making connections, asking questions, visualising, as well as identifying new vocabulary.

Our Foundies are now following the full Writing process, from brainstorming their ideas to drafting, revising, editing and finally publishing their writing for an audience. All students from Foundation to Year 6 follow The Writer’s Workshop model at BPS.

Numeracy

This term in Mathematics we have taught many different concepts including Location and Direction, Measurement, Shape, Multiplication (making groups), Division (sharing) as well as Counting and Subtraction.

Many of these areas have been linked with our Fairytale Unit. For example, we used groups or arrays to create a fairytale building and followed a recipe to measure ingredients such as one cup full of flour to make delicious gingerbread men!

Over the holidays you may like to look for opportunities to discuss mathematical concepts you see in the environment, such as reading numbers, skip counting, looking at shapes in our environment and discussing sides and corners, cooking is also a great way to practise concepts in Maths too!

Have a wonderful break,

Vicky, Louise and Kirsten
