Grade 5 & 6

Term 3, Week 10

What an incredibly exciting term it has been for our wonderful Year 5 & 6s!

It never fails to amaze us how swiftly the weeks pass by. It brings us with great satisfaction to observe our students deeply engrossed in their learning and enjoying spending time with their friends. Additionally, we would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the students who have achieved this term’s "Credits" . Their diligent efforts in the classroom and modelling of the school's values are truly commendable.

This term we saw both Year 5 and 6’s take on new experiences and challenges by attending camps. Here students were able to participate in a range of different activities where they encouraged each other to try new things and step out of their comfort zone. It’s always a delight to see students learning outside of the normal classroom environment.

At school, students have been working extremely hard, learning many new concepts and topics across the various areas of the curriculum.

For Literacy this term, students have been exploring writing different text types. They have been practising using the appropriate structure and language features used in different genres of writing.

We continue to remind students that most of the reading and writing that they will do when they go to secondary school will be non-fiction and how important it is to read widely and have a healthy balance of reading material.

In Numeracy we have been focusing on Multiplication and Division. We have looked at using different strategies to apply to problem solving. It is important that students understand that there are multiple ways to solve problems, however they need to be able to identify which is the most efficient strategy to use. The students also explored word problems and identified the important information they need to extract in order to solve the problem. Other topics we will be explored this next term included fractions, decimals, and percentages.

We continue to practise times tables with students through our ‘fluency warm-ups’. It is important that students understand simple multiplication facts as these are entwined and are an essential building block needed in other topic areas such as; division, area, volume, fractions etc.

In Integrated Studies our Sustainable Buildingunit has been a great success, where students explored sustainable building features such as solar energy, building orientation, shading, double glazing, electrical circuits and renewable ideas such as composting and vegetable gardens. Students had to then plan and pitch an idea for a tiny house design with sustainable features for a displaced person. In week 9 students presented their tiny houses through our expo and we hope you all enjoyed it.

Thank you to all Year 5 & 6 students, parents and teachers for an incredibly productive term thus far.

Best Regards,

Year 5 & 6 Team
