Indonesian
In Indonesian, the Early Years classes have been enjoying a story about two very silly orangutans and learning about the fruit and other food they eat on different days of the week. Classes have talked about where orangutans lived and what they should and shouldn't eat, as well as learning Indonesian names for fruit and other foods, colours, numbers and days of the week. Students have been reading the story each week in various ways and practicing different reading skills.
Primary Years classes have been learning about food and different ways to describe food. Students enjoyed sorting foods into their different flavours and then read a book called "Ibu ke Pasar" which is about a mother's trip to the market and the different fruit and vegetables she buys there. Students have been making picture dictionaries illustrating the words they have been learning.
Indonesian Day
On Thursday 17 August we celebrated Hari Kemerdekaan, Indonesian Independence Day. The school was a sea of red and white as the school community came dressed in the national colours of Indonesia. The day began with an Assembly which featured songs and dance from various classes. We had some very special guests; some of our Indonesian parents, who danced a traditional Indonesian dance and invited the entire school community to join in.
Many parents then assisted VG to prepare a special Indonesian lunch for the school with choices of Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and Mee Goreng (fried noodles) enjoyed by students and staff alike. Between lunch and recess students had the opportunity to make orangutan masks and woven bookmarks, and to play traditional games such as congklak, bekel and suwitan. Students were also able to see how our partner school in Indonesia, Al Syukro Universal Islamic Elementary School celebrate Indonesian Independence Day. The day was a wonderful celebration of Indonesian culture and we thank all those who helped us to celebrate in such a special way.
