Earlier in the year, two students from across each state and territory were selected to participate in an intensive Visual Art Program held at the National Art Gallery in Canberra.

Our Year 12 student, Katelyn Barr, was selected as one of two Western Australian invitees. Her extensive application centred on her major work from Year 11 entitled ‘Perception’, a multi-media textile, wearable artwork that incorporated light and projection.

During the program students worked on a range of practical projects including installations, collaborative art making and life drawing classes. The group of 16 national students also toured the Australian Art Collection escorted by the gallery's curators. During the visit Katelyn was able to connect with other like-minded art students for a fabulous week-long art intensive that was a productive and inspiring start to Katelyn’s Year 12 academic year.

Katelyn explains:

“The NGA Summer Scholarship has widened my perspective on the future pathways that the arts can lead to. My experience, particularly meeting practicing artsists, arts managers and curators resulted in my applying and being accepted into a Bacholar of Arts at UWA for 2024. I intend to study a double degree in Fine Arts and History of Art. I'd encourage anybody who’s interested in Visual Arts to apply."

We congratulate Katelyn on her successful application and the subsequent discovery of her post-school pathway. Well done and all the best for this exciting start to you arts career!

Any Year 11 Visual Art students interested in applying for the 2024 Summer School, please see Ms Wohlnick in the Art Department during Term 4.
