CURRICULUM FOCUS

In Mathematics this week, we are continuing to learn about the value of money by calculating change through problem solving.

VOCABULARY

Change: The amount of money given back when something is purchased and paid for with more money than is required. This can be calculated by subtracting the amount spent from the money given, or counting up from the amount spent until the money given is reached.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Solve the following worded problems by calculating how much money the purchases cost and how much change would be given.

John buys 2 packets of Pokemon cards for $5.70 each. If he paid with a $20 note, how much change would he get?

Sandy spent $10.95 on a dog toy, and a cage which cost her $13.95. She paid with two $20 notes. How much change did Sandy receive?
