FOUNDATION NEWS

What an amazing week we have had in Foundation! We engaged with author and illustrator Michael Salmon online, celebrated our very first Book Week parade last Friday, and participated in a couple of Science Experiments.

As scientists, we have been learning about the skills scientists use when conducting experiments. We have predicted, observed and asked questions during experiments. Earlier in the week, we made Frogs in a Pond. Did you know that jelly crystals change into a liquid once hot water is added? We patiently waited for the jelly to set and a chocolate frog was added before we enjoyed our Frog in a Pond. Another experiment was Magic Milk! We added full cream milk to a bowl, followed by some drops of food colouring, and then we observed what happens when liquid detergent is added via a cotton swab to the food colouring drops. Did you know that the detergent breaks down the fat content of the milk and amazing patterns are created? The detergent pushes away the food colouring, and the moving patterns are like a game of chasey! We cannot wait to conduct further experiments over the coming weeks!

If you are interested in volunteering your time, we are having a Science Day in Foundation on Wednesday, 10th September. Please put your name down on the timetable on the door outside FLW. Bonus points if you have a background in Science and would love to help plan or run a station!

Last Wednesday, we all enjoyed viewing author and illustrator Michael Salmon online as he shared his knowledge about writing and illustrating books. He even showed us how he created some of his books. Michael then took us step by step through an exercise of drawing his pet dog Bobo. Who knew that there were so many creative artists and illustrators in the Foundation area! It was a fun and interactive way to find out about Michael Salmon and we are very grateful that we got to participate in such an engaging experience.

The highlight of the week most definitely, was the Book Week Parade last Friday.

We went from normal Foundation students, to Princesses, Superheroes, and many favourite book characters such as Willy Wonka, Dorothy, Dogs, Ghosts, Dragons, Rainbow Fish, Minecraft characters, Lilo and Stitch…just to name a few. Many of us also brought in books that matched our character. Something magical also happened to the teachers…Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots and Shrek replaced Mrs Marsico, Miss Sargent and Mrs Wenckowski. What an amazing day to end Book Week 2025 at St Fidelis! Thank you to the parents for going to so much trouble with your child’s costumes for Book Week. It was greatly appreciated.

This week, we will be learning about…

  • Numeracy: Subtraction
  • Reading: Non-fiction texts and their features
  • InitiaLit: Using learnt sounds to build, read and spell words and sentences, and read decodable story books (Learnt sounds: m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r, c, o, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck, ss, ll)
  • Writing: Writing procedural texts and using verbs in our writing
  • Inquiry: Exploring what scientists do as further experiments are created

YEAR 1/2 NEWS

What a fun and exciting week we have had for Book Week! We had a special online Author session, lots of fun activities with the Book Week books and our Book Week Parade!

We kicked off our Book Week celebrations with an exciting online author session with Michael Salmon! We loved hearing him share about the books he has written and illustrated. As artists, we followed his instructions and had the chance to draw some of his characters—such a fun and creative experience. Many of us left feeling inspired, with some even saying we’d like to become authors or illustrators one day!

As readers, we also explored some of this year’s shortlisted Book Week titles. To deepen our understanding, we took part in a range of activities linked to the stories. These hands-on tasks not only made the books come alive but also gave us a wonderful way to show our comprehension and creativity.

As writers, we continued working on our narrative pieces by refining our planners and adding more detail to bring our ideas to life. We focused on extending our character and setting descriptions, making sure our readers could clearly imagine the people and places in our stories. We also developed exciting problems for our characters to face and thought of clever solutions to resolve them. It was exciting to see our writing grow as we added richer vocabulary and more descriptive sentences.

We ended the week with our much-anticipated Book Week Parade, where we proudly showcased our costumes. Some of us came dressed as army people, princesses, heroes, villains, and many other interesting characters from all kinds of texts. It was such a colourful and joyful way to celebrate our love of reading and bring our favourite stories to life! Thank you all our families for helping us create our costumes.

  • Fathers Day Breakfast Activities - Thursday, 4th September
  • School Closure Day - Friday, 5th September

YEAR 3/4 NEWS

As readers and writers, we engaged in an online webinar with author and illustrator Michael Salmon. Michael introduced us to some of his famous characters like Bert, Alexander Bunyip and Bobo. Michael demonstrated how to draw Bobo and he was very impressed with our drawings. Isabel was selected to be drawn by Michael and Giorgio was chosen to draw Michael.

As athletes, our Year 4 students continue to upskill their soccer skills during their Wednesday sessions at Parade College. The students enjoyed playing a mini soccer game, drills with cones and a couple of warm up games. We look forward to our last session next week!

As scientists, we are beginning to create experiments. We would like to invite parents in our community who would like to present their own experiment for the 3/4 year level. Please email your child’s classroom teacher for dates and times.

This week, we will be learning about…

  • Numeracy: Angles
  • Reading: Class novel on Charlotte’s Web
  • Writing: Visualisation
  • Spelling: The suffix -ful
  • Inquiry: Science experiments using the scientific method
  • Religion: Jubilee year of hope

YEAR 5/6 NEWS

We have now journeyed well into Term 3 and are so proud of the effort and enthusiasm our students have continued to show in their learning. Week 7 was a busy and exciting time, filled with opportunities to grow as learners, inquirers, writers, and people of faith.

As Communicators, we were fortunate this week to have engaged in a special Zoom visit with illustrator Michael Salmon, who is well known for Watziling Matilda and Bobo the Dog. We learned about the importance of illustrations in bringing stories to life and how illustrators use imagination, humour, and creativity to connect with audiences. We felt inspired to apply these skills in our own writing and artwork as we continue developing our narrative pieces.

As Writers, we also celebrated Book Week. We explored a variety of recognised books, discussing their themes, illustrations, and the messages they shared. The Book Week Parade was lots of fun, and we enjoyed seeing the creativity in everyone’s costumes. We reflected on how stories can bring people together and encourage us to see the world through different perspectives.

As People of a Faith Community, we continued to deepen our faith through prayer and liturgy. 5/6MC and 5/6ZK joined together to celebrate Mass, providing a meaningful opportunity for reflection, gratitude, and prayer as a community. We recognised how the values we share in our faith—such as kindness, respect, and compassion- are also values we can live out in our classrooms and community every day.

As Inquirers, we are very excited to look forward to our Hands-on Science Incursion, which will be taking place in Week 8. To prepare for this, we adjusted our timetable so that specialist classes will be held on Tuesday instead. Students were reminded to wear their sports uniform on Wednesday for the incursion. We are eager to explore science concepts interactively and practically that will allow us to experiment, question, and discover.

Looking Ahead We are excited to share some upcoming events in our school community:

  • Tuesday, we have Specialists: Students will need to wear their sports uniform.
  • Thursday Morning – Father’s Day Breakfast: We are looking forward to welcoming fathers and special father figures to join us for a morning of connection and celebration.
  • Friday – School Closure Day: A reminder that there will be no school for students next Friday.
