SPOTLIGHT ON THE CLASSROOMS

K-2 CLASSROOM
Engaging Activities for Literacy Groups
Incorporating fun, hands-on activities is a fantastic way to make learning tricky words stick for K-2 students at Sacred Heart. These activities not only make the process more enjoyable but also help students build a deeper connection with the words they're learning. Here are some of our favourite activities from our literacy groups.
Tricky Word Bingo: This a class favourite by creating bingo cards with the tricky words students are working on. We call out a word, and students can cover it with a colourful counter. Students can play in small groups, turning over two cards at a time to find a match. This game is great for repetition and helps students quickly recognise the words by sight.
Wushka: Everyone in K-2 loves our Wushka Reading Rotation. Wushka is a digital reading program designed to support students as they learn to read. This program provides a comprehensive library of levelled and decodable readers for the students to choose from.
Wikki Stick Word Building: This tactile activity is perfect for kinesthetic learners. Students can use Wikki Stix to form the letters of their tricky words on their desks. The physical act of forming the letters helps reinforce the correct spelling in their minds.
Memory: Using a game like Memory is an excellent strategy for helping our K-2 students improve their tricky word identification. The game's repetitive nature provides the practice needed for these words to move from a conscious effort to automatic recognition, which is a critical step in building reading fluency.
Using a variety of these activities ensures that all students, regardless of their learning style, have a chance to succeed and have fun while mastering their tricky words. These activities enhance reading ability by allowing students to quickly identify their tricky words and read sentences fluently.

We are excited to launch a new feature in our newsletter: student book reviews! This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to share their love of reading and recommend great books to their peers.
Our first brave reviewer is Sam, who has shared his thoughts on the book Chaos. We're thrilled to have him kick things off! Be sure to keep an eye on future newsletters to catch more reviews and discover your next favourite read.
