News from our Classrooms - Year 5 & 6

Bayview Adventure Camp

This year the 5/6s went to Bayview Adventure Camp. We left on Monday the 25 of May and got back on Wednesday the 27 of May. The bus ride there was about an hour and was very exciting knowing we were almost there. Whilst we were at camp we did so many fun things like canoeing, a zipline, the low ropes course and my personal favourite the giant swing. I loved the giant swing because you went so high and then you let go and had probably one of the scariest drops of your life. After we dropped we were swinging for ages and then the instructor caught our feet and let us go again.

Some people also really enjoyed canoeing because some of them jumped off or capsized in their clothes which is all part of the fun! All the food was really delicious, we had pasta for dinner and pancakes for breakfast along with toast and cereal. We had so many treats like cupcakes, cookies, chocolates and more. There were also prizes for cleanest cabin and winning the trivia.

On the second day we couldn't contain our excitement as we were headed to the Koala Conservation and Penguin Parade. The Penguin Parade was the coldest I had ever felt and I needed four layers of clothes to keep me warm. We ended up seeing about 600 penguins, I really loved it. Did you know the penguins we went to see were about as small as a microphone?

On the last day it was raining so we put on our jackets and rugged up and then we went to feed the animals by hand. We fed pigs, geese and goats and so many people tried to pick up the chickens but they were so fast no one could catch them. After that we had our final activity called the Amazing Race. We went into our two groups called penguins and wombats. We had challenges like getting a ping pong ball into a bucket and others like keepy-uppy. We had about an hour to complete as many challenges as we could and we all only had about 3-5 challenges left. My team, the penguins, ended up winning but not by very much. After that we hopped on the bus. A lot of us slept on the bus because we were very tired. Then after about an hour and a half we got back to school and our parents picked us up.

Interschool Sport

This Term the 5/6s have been excited to participate in interschool sports. We have even been lucky enough to have the year 4s join us along the way. The 4 sports that are played in term two are: Footy Mixed, Soccer Mixed, Netball Girls and Netball Mixed. We put our preferences down and we are likely to get first or second. I am in Mixed Footy. If we have a home game the Netball players play at school and the Footy and Soccer players get on a bus and go to Gardiner Oval. We split the oval in half so there is even space for footy and soccer. It is very fun playing sports against the other schools and we love being a little competitive.

Year 5 and 6 Civics and Citizenship

In Civics and Citizenship we have been getting started for debating and learning about Parliament and politics. We had Milton Dick and Dr. Karina Garland from Parliament House come to our school to teach us about Parliament. Our school got to hold one of the old flags that flew above the Parliament House. So far in class we have learnt about the three levels of government, separation of powers and passing a bill. We are starting to learn about debating, we have been put into teams and we are working together to make speeches on our assigned topics and practice public speaking. We are all so excited and have been enjoying our lessons and can’t wait for debating.

Year 5 and Year 6 Electives

This term we have been doing electives with Mrs Meseha. We were doing Outdoor Education. The first activity was making bush huts which we made and planned for two sessions. In the first session we watched a video about the different types of bush huts. Then in groups of five or six we drew a diagram of how we wanted our hut to look. The supplies we had were a rope, a tarp and sticks. Then the week after we made our huts. Some groups made a tp, leant against the stairs or walls or were free standing. Once we had finished building we did a rain and weight test. We put a wooden cube inside the hut and if it got wet then it failed the rain test. After that we put a small weight on top to see if our hut could hold it without breaking. It was a hard challenge. For our second activity we read a book about the Svalbard Global Seed vault. Then we planted native seeds that Mrs Meseha collected last year. We planted wattle and native indigo. We were very happy to realise that they have started growing.

Kinder Visit

This term the Year 5 and 6 students  went to a couple of kinders! The first kinder was called Little Paddingtons, and only the year 5 went there. The second kinder, was called Sunnyside and Year 6 came with us! The first thing we did was read a book. The book was called "Down the Road little Bee". It is a story about a bee looking for pollen and the bee goes through the year meeting different other insects and finds lots of plants. After we got into our partners we got given a little bag with all arts and crafts. We were making a little bee! Once we were all done making our bee at Paddington's, we went around in a circle and said the name of our bees! Later, we went out to play with our buddies! Near the end of our Sunnyside visit, little kids sang us a song! Finally, it was time to say goodbye to our buddies. I really enjoyed going to the kindergartens and doing fun activities with our little buddies! I really hope we can go to some more soon!
