The Long Walk Reflection 

Thursday 4th of June was a really educational day. It was amazing to have Andrew Walker come to Loyola and share his life experiences. It was really inspiring to hear about his history with his Indigenous great-great-grandparents and how his grandfather was the first Australian Indigenous person to ever marry a Non-Indigenous person. We learned so much about him and how we should be ‘All In’ for this 2026 Long Walk.

Andrew spoke about his childhood, his Indigenous identity, and the places he grew up. He also shared stories from his time playing with the Carlton Football Club and talked about his children. Andrew reflected on the experiences of his great-great-grandparents, who were photographed and documented by Non‑Indigenous people as part of testing practices. The people who tried to document Andrew’s grandparents tried to classify them as different from others. Andrew made sure that people didn’t treat him any differently from other races after his grandparents' experiences of racism. 

In conclusion, the Year Sixes had a great day listening to Andrew Walker share his knowledge and experiences with us all. We all had a great time and we can’t wait to share what we learnt with our families back home. A big thank-you to the Year Six teachers for taking the time out of their day to take us all on this wonderful excursion. Andrew Walker was such a great role model for young Indigenous Australians. We wish him well with his future career, helping Indigenous Australians like him find their voice.
