Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent. Don’t forget to record your book for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. This is due on the 4th of September.
Mathematics: Students are to work on the recall of any facts that they are not automatic in recalling. You may like to create flash cards or skip count aloud with your child to help support their learning with this.
Remembering we are aiming to have learnt all our multiplication facts up to x12 by the end of the year. If your child can recall all of them, they can switch over to their division facts.
Inquiry: Students are working towards their Year 5 Celebration of learning coming up this Tuesday evening at 6:30pm. We anticipate this will be for no longer than 1 hour. This is an important celebration of our students and their learning, and we strongly encourage parents to make this a priority.
EXHIBITION: Students will complete their sixth journal this week. It is due to be uploaded in Toddle by 5pm Sunday. Students should be working at home to learn. Making contact with an expert ‘Primary Resource’ is important. If you have connections that you and your child can access, can you please facilitate this via a phone call, facetime, visit or email. A primary resource is a person or the writing/recording of personal experience in the area of your child’s inquiry. For instance, if the area of inquiry is looking at how leadership skills are grown through sport, your child could speak to a sport coach or player who has impacted or impacted someone else’s personal growth.
Year 6 Graduation: We would like to share a photo gallery of the graduating class on graduation night. We need 2 photos of your child to show how they have grown up into the students we know today. These photos can be emailed to Mrs Zadow (Zadow.jayne@goldengrove.sa.edu.au). Please include a baby photo and first day of school photo. We are on a countdown and currently have 5 people who have sent photos. Congrats to them! Please have these in by the end of Term 3.
Special Persons Afternoon
Invitations for SPA (Special Person’s afternoon) should have arrived home.
There is a parent form attached. This is to give permission for your child to leave early with their special person. Unless these are returned, they will not be allowed to leave until the end of the day.
Current and Upcoming Learning
Reader’s Workshop: Students will be using Reader’s Workshop as an opportunity to read different texts that will inform their understanding of their chosen area in inquiry.
Writer’s Workshop: Year 5 students have been working on their letter writing skills and have been making application for different leadership roles for next year.
Year 6 students are reading and writing related to their exhibition research.
Mathematics: Students have been identifying the features of 3D shapes which include the number of faces, vertices and edges. They will be using their spatial awareness to create nets, so that they can build their own 3D shapes.
Inquiry:
Year 5: Students are currently completing their leadership application letters. They will be inquiring into different leaders and identifying the characteristics they have, what action they have taken and what impact their actions have had on the world.
Exhibition: This week we are researching. This will be finished mid next week when our focus will change to presenting what students have learnt. At home, students can continue to research and will benefit from conversations about their inquiry, discussions relating to experiences and posing of questions. This week we have looked at how to successfully search on the internet. We will also look at how surveys can be constructed to find information and how to reference their work. Please note that Exhibition Night will be Wednesday, September 10th from 6.30pm. We have a slightly later time to be mindful of parents who have work commitments. The students are to be congratulated for the hard work they are doing and their positive attitude!
