Chaplain's Message

Zechariah and Elizabeth have been the focus of this term’s House Services held in the Chapel.

Elderly, Godly couple who desperately wanted children, but Elizabeth remained barren – in those days, a sign of God’s disfavour! Zechariah, a priest, was lighting the incense in the temple, when he was visited by the Angel Gabriel who brought the news that he and Elizabeth were to have a baby, and he was to be called John! This, of course, was John the Baptist – the one to get folk ready for the coming of the Messiah!

In the absence of Snapchat, social media and even newspapers, the role of the prophets, was vital in getting the plan out there in the community. Isiah foretells the coming of John – “the one shouting in the wilderness, bringing people to repentance.” And sure enough, this little baby grew to a man, one who lived in the desert eating locusts and honey, dressing in animals’ skins but with a message of hope that people were hungry to hear. He was anointed for a special purpose, and he was obedient to his task.

The very same angel visited a young girl Mary to tell her that she was “chosen” by God to have a baby – Jesus, the Messiah, the one to bring salvation to the world! She agreed, saying, “I am the Lord’s Servant,” and so began a journey for Mary that was filled with drama, joy, excitement, tragedy and more. She was obedient to the task. Joseph had to be assured of his role which he embraced with grace and courage. A team of carers, if you like, all of whom were faithfully obedient to the task ahead of them.

In moments of doubt, I always draw strength from the attention to detail with which God put this plan into action.

  1. It took years – He was not in a hurry.
  2. He chose his people with great care.
  3. Faithfulness was a key ingredient of each participant.
  4. They listened and believed.

This Christmas, as we hear again the story, may we pause to put flesh and blood onto real people to whom we owe years of Christmas traditions – their obedience and commitment to the task that God laid upon them has enabled the sacred plan to unfold, bringing hope, new life, and salvation to the world. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus this year, may we too listen and believe.

Go safely and have a wonderful holiday!
