NT Middle School Ethics Olympiad

On the 20th of November, St Philips had 2 x junior school teams entered into the Ethics Olympiad.

Team 1:

Matilda Bhattarai, Ella Schwer, Bridie Hayward, Isabella Martinez, Charlotte McArthur, Eunice Tabbada

Team 2:

Toby Van-Holsteyn, Thomas Anderson, Jasper Bethune, Jack Johnson and Izaak Dulvarie

They spent the whole day debating other schools about ethical cases such as:

- 'Should teachers be replaced with AI bots'

-'Is lying justifiable when trying to protect someone'

-'Is there such thing as an innocent bystander in bullying'

-'Are certain causes more important than others'

-'Do adoptive parents have any obligation to educate their child about the child's own heritage'

-'Are predictive algorithms justifiable in parole decisions'

-'The ethics surrounding fast fashion'

They did so well that Team 1 won for the NT, and have been invited to the international finals in Feb 2025.
