Summer Holiday Reading

As summer holidays approach, we know your children are ready for a well-deserved break. Whilst relaxation is essential, keeping young minds engaged is equally important.
Reading over the summer can prevent what educators call the "summer slide", which is when children lose some of the academic gains they have made during the school year due to a lack of academic activity. However, reading is one of the best ways to prevent this and even boost skills before the next school year begins.
Summer reading in important to continue building vocabulary and comprehension, and let’s not forget that picking up a book is a great way to help reduce your child’s screen time. Many young people turn to screens when they’re bored, but a good book can provide just as much excitement or relaxation. Books can be just as thrilling as games or shows, especially when kids find characters or topics they’re curious about.Getting lost in a book can boost concentration and encourage imagination, allowing your child to explore new worlds, cultures, and experiences without leaving home. Unlike screens - which often provide constant visual and auditory stimulation - reading offers a calm, focused activity, reducing overstimulation by giving children’s minds a break.
By setting a balanced routine this summer that includes regular reading time, you can help your child develop healthier habits and rely less on screens and others for entertainment.
With only a couple of weeks left, encourage your child to visit our school library to select some summer reading. Our helpful librarians are always eager to helps students find a book they will enjoy. Check out our Summer reading guide on My Mt A for further suggestions:
Lastly, don’t forget to lead by example; reading is a great way for families to connect over shared stories and discussions about books, so finding a story you can engage in is a great way to participate.
Let’s make this summer a season of discovery and fun through books! Happy reading!
