Weekly Wrap: Year 7

Year 7 English

In recent weeks, the Year 7’s have been working on their personal response essay based on the film Hunt for the Wilderpeople. We have been exploring how the film shows that adversity and setbacks can lead people to develop resilience and grow as a person. The class has identified key challenges the main characters faced during the film and how these events changed them as people. They have also used their new knowledge of film techniques to analyse how the director portrayed the characters throughout the movie to show these changes and their growth. We have even written our own Haikus as the main character, Ricky, recited several Haiku poems throughout the film.

Year 7 Food Technology

The Year 7’s have continued to learn about Methods of Cookery. The last couple of weeks they have made a Belgian Tea Cake using the creaming method and Sponge Cake using the beating method. This week we will focus on the rubbing in method and making Devonshire tea.

Year 7 Science:

The Year 7s have been learning about properties of solids, liquids and gas. They have been using the particle model to understand why matter undergoes phase changes. The Year 7s also had fun making and playing with a substance called “Oobleck”, a mixture or cornflour and water. The Year 7s discovered that it’s a unique substance, as it behaves like a liquid when left alone, but behaves like a solid when a force is applied to it. That’s because the viscosity (thickness) increases when a force is applied to it.

Year 7 IT:

For their end of topic assessment task, the Year 7s are currently designing and making simple video games using a program called Kodu. It’s been exciting to see the different types of games students have been creating. Some are making racing games, some are making games where you need to locate collectables, and others are designing games that involve combat. Once the games are developed, students will have a chance to evaluate their creations as part of the assessment. Games and evaluations are due on Friday the 4th of April (last day of term).
