Year 5/6 Excursion to Victoria State Library
Yesterday the year 5/6 classes had an excursion to the State Library of Victoria. They participated in a workshop that builds on core literacy skills to explore important concepts of online research and critical literacy.
The students were discussing that not everything they read and see online is true, and that it can be tricky to distinguish between credible and unreliable information.
They also enjoyed a guided tour of the library's services and heritage spaces.
Below are some student reflections on the excursion.
We learned research skills, saw Ned Kelly’s armour and learned about the Dewey Decimal System. We discovered that Melbourne State Library is the 3rd most visited library in the world and they have roughly 8 million items.

As soon as we stepped foot on the cold marble floor, I heard someone whisper `this place is beautiful` and I very much agreed. When we first walked in, we were told to put our bags in these lockers that looked like the ones you find at the swimming pool. After that, we were taken into a funny room that was upstairs. Then we spent the next forty minutes on a really fun workshop about reliable and unreliable websites. We learned about the PARTY strategy which stands for purpose, author, reference, time and you. After we did that, we did a big tour of some important places in the library. We saw Ned Kelly's armour, lots of amazing paintings and even a huge lego version of the whole entire library.

The 5/6s went to the State Library and as soon as we got there we were met outside by some tour guides who quickly told us about the library and how it had 5-8 Million items inside. Both classes were then separated and our group (5/6B) went upstairs where we learnt about reliable and unreliable websites and how .gov and .edu were reliable and .com, .net and .org were not. We then had a quick test which we all got right and we learnt how to use the PARTY acronym when researching. P stands for purpose, A stands for Author, R stands for references, T stands for time and Y stands for you. After learning about PARTY we had a quick tour of the library and saw some artwork, Ned Kelly’s armour and tons of books (of course). We even got to try and find books using the Dewey Decimal System.
