Year 6 News

Reading

The Year 6 students have further looked at how they make connections while reading and the different types of connections (text to self, text to text and text to world. Students also discussed how to make deep connections to the texts they read.

During the last week of term, students revisited this term's learning. They chose a text that they have enjoyed reading and created a poster about the text. They were to  include the main idea, details, summary, themes and connections they made while reading.

Writing

The Year 6’s have been working hard these past few weeks. Between Athletics Day, Cross Country, the Young Leader’s Dream and Lead Conference with Photo Day on the 27th to round it all off, they have been finalising their information reports. Some have progressed on to making an information report for our school Library. Some students chose to do a new animal to focus on, while others wanted to continue working on the same animal.

The students working on the information report for the Library have been incorporating higher-order language and visuals, specific for the topic- such as scientific names of the animals, graphs showing the weather variations of their animals preferred climate and other similar features of an information text.

This gives the students a wider exposure to language that will support them through high-school science (specifically, early high-school Biology). It also widens their vocabulary and builds their ability to read and spell words with tricky trigraphs, such as “hatch.

Maths To finish off the term, the Year 6 students have been building their confidence in maths through fun and practical activities. They’ve been learning different strategies to solve problems efficiently, such as breaking numbers apart, using patterns to check their work, and applying mental math techniques. We’ve also been tackling real-world challenges to show how math is used in everyday life. By working through these challenges, students have been developing problem-solving skills and gaining a deeper understanding of number relationships.“ We use multiplication when we go shopping” - Jagman 6E

‘Some of the problems have been challenging, but I found a way to solve them and now I'm really good at them’ - Alexis 6A

Inquiry

In Inquiry, our Year 6 students have been exploring the key events and influential figures that shaped the Federation of Australia. Through independent and collaborative research, they have been investigating the journey to Federation, including the debates, referendums, and significant milestones that led to the unification of the colonies in 1901.

Students have selected key figures such as Sir Henry Parkes, Edmund Barton, and Alfred Deakin, using guiding research questions to uncover their contributions. They have then chosen creative ways to present their findings, including posters, slideshows, and reports. Throughout this process, they have focused on important project elements such as accurate research, clear organisation, creativity, and effort. It has been incredible to see our students bring history to life, developing their research, collaboration, and presentation skills along the way!

“One of the reasons Australia federated was to get a centralised transport system” - Jorja 6E“For my Inquiry project, I choose Mary Lee, who was a pioneer in advocating for women's rights to vote in the late 1800s” - Jasleen 6E

Social and Emotional Learning

During our wellbeing sessions students have been discussing the situations we encounter where our emotions lead us to say things that we don’t mean and can be hurtful to others around us.When this happens, we have to stop and think if what we are saying is True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary or Kind. Using this Students developed and made posters using the THINK strategy to help remind students that we should always be kind to others.
