Year 5 News

Reading

This fortnight in Reading, we have been busy making text-to-text connections by comparing themes, characters, and events across different books, helping us recognise the similarities and differences between texts. We have also explored text-to-world connections by relating our reading to real-life events, deepening our understanding of what we are reading. Students have also practised visualising by creating mental images while reading, using the descriptive and sensory details from the text to imagine different settings, characters, and events.

“A text to world connection is when you read a book and a part of the book reminds you of something that has/is happening in the world.” - Prish 5C

Writing

In Writing, students in Year 5 have been learning about and creating different forms of poetry. We have spent each day creating a different poem to add to our poetry booklets, including acrostic poems, cinquain poems, shape poems, haikus and free verse. Through crafting our poetry pieces, we have developed our creativity and understanding of how language can be used to paint pictures with words. Check out some of our creative pieces below!

“I liked writing poems. It was fun coming up with different poems and publishing them.” - Maddy 5C

Maths

Over the past two weeks in Maths, we have been revising our multiplication skills, using different strategies to find which one we prefer using to solve equations with confidence! Students have also begun exploring division, learning how to interpret remainders and apply division in real-life situations. In Geometry, we have also been investigating tessellations and discovering how shapes fit together without gaps or overlaps to create creative patterns. We have added some photos of our tessellation creations below for you to enjoy!

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have been researching and presenting a project on an influential person from the colonial times. We have used research questions to gather the key information and chosen a creative way to present our findings, such as a poster, slideshow, or report. We have worked extremely hard on discussing and implementing the important elements that make a strong project, such as, accurate research, clear organisation, creativity, and effort. It was amazing to see all of our projects come to life as we developed our research, collaboration, and presentation skills!

“Emmerson and I are researching Arthur Phillip and we learnt that he was the commander of the first fleet of 11 ships.” -  Chelsy 5C

Social and Emotional Learning

This fortnight in SEL, we have continued our topic of Stress Management by practicing collaborative play to lift our moods and create supportive environments. We have also had the opportunity to listen to guided exercises, which helped us explore different ways to calm our bodies when we are experiencing intense emotions, such as deep breathing and relaxation techniques. It has been great developing a stronger classroom support network and learning how to manage stress in healthy ways.

Additionally, we have begun to incorporate our School-Wide Positive Behaviour (SWPBS) lessons. We have focused on being kind by speaking kindly to others and being responsible by moving safely around the school, playing in the correct play areas and following our ICT acceptable use agreement.

“I felt relaxed. I felt calm. I felt like I was in a different world.” - Artaaz 5C

“My body felt calm, relaxed, and focused.” - Aishani 5C
