Year 3 News

Reading
In weeks 9 and 10 Year 3 learned about the author’s purpose. We learned that authors write their texts for one of three reasons: to persuade, to inform, or to entertain. We read several short texts and matched them up with the appropriate author’s purpose, along with an explanation as to why the text matched with that purpose. We then moved on to matching books in our classroom library with an author’s purpose.
We also had a chance to review our persuasive texts and techniques.
“It was fun! I liked reading the short stories” - Zoeya
“I loved the story about the wizard stealing Mr. Forster’s toothbrush” - Rehatbir
Writing
To wrap up Term 1, our Year 3 students have been hard at work finalising and publishing the narratives they've developed over the term.
Through creativity and dedication, they've crafted stories that showcase their writing skills and imagination.
Using Microsoft Word, they have brought their ideas to life in a polished, professional way.
We’re so proud of their hard work and can't wait for you to see their finished pieces!
Students have also been learning key handwriting skills, including letter formation on the dotted thirds.
They are also practising correct pencil grip and posture. Holding the pencil comfortably with the thumb, index, and middle fingers, while sitting up straight with feet flat.
“We learned how to write nice and neat on the dotted thirds.” - Isabelle 3A
“It was really fun to publish our work. It was a bit of a challenge.” - Kayan 3A
Maths
In Maths this fortnight the Year 3 have been focusing on reading and telling the time on analog and digital clocks. Students engaged in a range of fun and interactive activities, from participating in Time Bingo to using miniature analog clocks to match times with digital times.
Students have really enjoyed manipulating the hands on the miniature clocks to match different times and everyone was so excited when their times were called out during the Time Bingo activities.
“It was really fun and we liked the game. I won the Bingo Time game!” - Holly 3C
“It was really fun, we had the clocks next to us. Before we could place a counter on our time we had to make it with the clocks.” - Deepti 3C
Inquiry
Over the last few weeks of term, our Year 3 students have been working on a fun and engaging Inquiry Project!
This project gives students the chance to explore celebrations from around the world, allowing them to learn about the history, significance, and traditions behind different cultural events.
Students have been following a detailed checklist to guide their research and presentations. They’ve answered key questions including:
- Where did the celebration start?
- Why is it celebrated?
- Who celebrates it?
- Where is it celebrated?
- How is it celebrated?
In addition to answering these questions, students have been working hard to organise their projects with clear subheadings, pictures, and captions.
To make their projects even more exciting, students have been given a variety of ways to present their findings, including PowerPoint presentations, posters, storybooks, comics, information reports, plays or scripts.
We’ve been impressed by the creativity and effort the students have put into these projects, and we can’t wait to see their finished work!
We encourage you to ask your child about their project and celebrate their hard work together.
“For our Inquiry project we have been focusing on a celebration. We have been gathering lots of information.” - Sifat 3A
“I am researching Eid.” - Pouniu 3A
Here is the checklist that the Year 3s have been using to keep them on track:
Social and Emotional Learning
In SEL this fortnight the Year 3s have been preparing for their Student Led Conferences.
It was nice to go over the work of the term and for students to choose the learning that they are most proud of and excited to show their loved ones.
A few of the Year 3s have chosen their Inquiry projects to showcase their researching, writing and organisation skills.
The cohort also touched on the importance of forming and maintaining positive relationships.
Students had to come up with a personal goal for themselves. Once their goal was clear, we referred to the earlier task in which the class developed ideas about how children can contribute positively to the classroom and playtime experience of their peers.
Special Event
As Term 1 came to a close, students participated in some big events. In week 9, Cross Country gave our students a chance to compete in long-distance running. Year 3 students were in the “10 and Under” category, which meant that the competition was fierce. We are proud of all the students who participated and gave it their best!!
Students were also excited to welcome you, the parents, to school for their Student Led Conferences! In 10 minute slots, students showed the Maths and Writing work they were most proud of. They also demonstrated their reading abilities, and explained what they were doing to achieve their reading goals. Thank you for joining us in our learning journey.
