Year 2 News

Reading
During reading the Year 2 students have been practising inferring character feelings using fiction texts. They learned to use clues from the story—like actions, words, and expressions—to figure out how characters are feeling. For example, when a character dropped their ice cream and looked sad, they inferred the character felt disappointed. When we infer, we use our prior knowledge and clues from the text to make and inference.
“Inferencing is when you look at a characters face and body and say how they might feel” - Saskia 2B
“Pig was eating like crazy with his tongue out” - Alex 2B
“Pig the Pug was snatching and making faces” - Hunter 2B
Writing
The Year 2 students have been busily working on their persuasive texts. They have chosen their parents as their audience and they have written about wanting a pet, toy or game. Students have been using their planning template to write in paragraphs, use persuasive language, add statistics and rhetorical questions.
‘We are persuading our parents to get us something. We needed to choose what to write about, I chose to write about a plushie. Then we wrote about why we wanted a plushie and listed the reasons. I chose fluffy, squishy and cute because I think plushies are cute, fluffy and squishy.’ Mya 2A
‘We need to persuade our parents to get us food or a toy. I chose a mini car. We needed to make an argument about it. When they take us to the shops and get it for us we say thank you.’ Lexi 2A
Maths
In Year 2 students have been looking at telling the time using an analogue and digital clock. They know when the minute hand is at the top, it is always o’clock! The students have been using mini clocks to demonstrate a specific time and also be able to identify what time it shows. In addition, students have been learning about location and giving directions. In the classroom the children have been instructing each other to get from one place to another using directional language including right, left, forwards and backwards.
‘I know how to do the digital clock too!’ - Nawaab 2C
‘I’ve learned how to tell the time when it is half past’ - Indianna 2C
‘I have been learning half past and how it is on the 6 and the small hand goes to any number to show the hour’ - Ayla 2C
Inquiry
The Year 2 cohort has been looking forward to Family Day and have been busily preparing questions. Students had to think of questions in the areas of technology, communication and travel. They had discussions with their peers and then they came up with questions like:
- ‘How many TV’s did you have when you were younger?’
- ‘How did you get to school?’
- ‘How old were you when you first got your mobile phone?’
- ‘How did you entertain yourself when you were little?’
‘I did some questions for Family Day. Some of my questions were:
- How many TV’s did you have when you were a kid?
- Did you have Ipad’s?
- Did you have photos that were colourful?’ Mya 2A
Social and Emotional Learning
In Social and Emotional Learning, Year 2 students have been thinking about our school values and how they can display them each and every day. Thinking specifically about being responsible, the students have shown great care and consideration for keeping the school clean and reducing the amount of litter on the ground. Additionally, they have been considering how they can speak kindly to peers using good manners and a kind tone of voice. The children have been practising those skills through acting out different scenarios in the classroom.
‘We have to say nice words to each other. Use the magic words please and thank you. Also, use a kind tone!’ - Ivaan 2C
‘We need to keep school nice and tidy. I’ve been picking up rubbish in the yard at recess and lunch.’ - Emily 2C
Special Event
Cross Country
On Tuesday the 25th of March the Year 2 students were excited to be attending the Whole School Cross Country event. They wore their house colours and sat in the middle of the oval with their classes. They firstly watched the Preps and Year 1’s run around the oval once. Then it was the their turn to run around the oval. Parents came and cheered on students by the sidelines of the oval.
‘At Cross Country we had fun and that’s all that matters up until we are in Grade 3.’ Mya 2A
‘Cross Country was fun, we ran across the oval and I think the first person was Raff and Mya came third.’ Eliz 2A
Family Day
Year 2 cohort has been learning about families and how they have been changing. Students have been exploring how technology has changed throughout time and how it has affected communication, travel and how these changes have impacted families and family time. Families were invited to come and speak about their experiences and bring along any artefacts they had from the past. Year 2 students prepared questions and asked the families these questions to families who attended.
"We were in our classrooms and then our mums and dads came in the room and told us about what was in the past and what is in the future now.” Mya 2A
“We got to show our parents our work.” Tyron 2A
