Year 1 News

Reading
Year 1 students have been busily recapping all of the learning that took place in this term. Students have revisited ideas around what makes a ‘just right’ and continued to practise applying the segmenting and blending strategy to read unfamiliar words. They have also been practising reading to a partner and learning how to be a good listener when they are being read to. The Year 1 teachers encourage all students to continue reading every day during the holidays and to continue practising their reading strategies. A great activity during the holidays is to visit the local library and borrow some new and interesting books to read!
Writing
Year 1 students have been learning about recounts. Here is an example of one from one of the students. A recount is where you write about something you have seen or done. Students enjoyed writing about what they did on the weekend.
Narrative writing has been another area of focus. Narratives include a study of Characters, Setting, Plot, Conflict and Resolution. Students have enjoyed writing their own narrative sentences after planning for their story. Pictures were drawn of characters and settings to support the writing process.
Maths
This week, our Year 1 students have been focusing on statistics. They have been learning how to collect data and present it in a way that is easy to read and understand.
One of the key skills they have developed is organising information using tally charts. By counting and grouping data in fives, tally charts help students see patterns and compare results quickly.
The students worked together to come up with interesting questions to ask their classmates. Once collected, they used tally marks to display their findings clearly. Through this task, Year 1 have developed their maths skills and also their confidence in asking questions, working collaboratively, and interpreting data.
Inquiry
This term, our students have been exploring how daily life has changed over the years by comparing their experiences with those of their parents and grandparents. Through discussions, stories, and historical sources such as photographs, they have been developing a deeper understanding of how people lived in the past. From communication and transportation to school life and entertainment, students have been fascinated to learn how different, or similar, life was for previous generations.
Social and Emotional Learning
The Year 1 students have continued to focus on Emotional Literacy in our SEL lessons and exploring our school expectations through SWPBS lessons. This week we learnt about being responsible by taking responsibility for our actions. Students played a variety of games with a focus on resilience and sportsmanship. We finished the term by thinking about everything we have learnt and using this knowledge to identify actions that are suitable to express a variety of emotions.
Special Event - Cross Country
Year 1 students tested their fitness during the CPS Cross Country in week 8. Everyone put their best foot forward during a very fast lap of the oval cheered on by the whole school community.
