Year 4 Team

Term 1 in Year 4!
Our Year 4’s have had a fantastic start to the year! All students have settled in well to their new grades and have begun forming new connections and friendships with different peers. From the beginning of the year, we have had a strong focus on setting high expectations around how we can set ourselves up for success in learning. This has included organising workbooks, resetting learning spaces, and ensuring students are prepared for each lesson.
In English, students have been engaging with texts including Hansel and Gretel and Ned Kelly. Through these stories, we explored what makes a character a hero or a villain. Students practised forming arguments with evidence, developing persuasive skills to convince others of their stance on these characters. Additionally, we delved into our inquiry topic Civics and Citizenship, learning about the roles and responsibilities of local government, as well as the importance of democracy and voting in our community. A highlight of this unit was a visit from the Mayor of Cardinia, who shared valuable insights into his role.
During our mathematics units, we focused on place value with decimal numbers. Students explored how the place value system could be extended to tenths and hundredths, and worked on representing and ordering decimal numbers. Students enjoyed our measurement units, particularly how to determine the area and perimeter of various shapes. We have been incredibly impressed with their resilience when faced with challenging problems, as they continue to develop strategies to help them navigate the ‘learning pit’ with confidence and persistence.
Our Core Literacy lessons have focused on the different morphemes in words. We have been exploring the meanings of these morphemes and how this can support our spelling and reading. Students have also had opportunities to practice their joined handwriting, focusing on letter formation and specific letter joins.
A highlight for students this term was our incursion led by Supreme Incursions, which focused on team building through communication, resilience, and problem-solving. It was fantastic to see students enthusiastically participating in various challenges, approaching them with a positive attitude. They worked collaboratively with different peers, supporting and encouraging one another while discussing effective strategies. It was fantastic to see so many smiles on their faces!
We are incredibly proud of how much our Year 4’s have achieved already. We can’t wait to see what Term 2 brings!
