Principal's Report

This week has been a very special one at Truganina College, where we have celebrated our diversity, inclusion, and excellence in learning during Harmony Week.

One of the things that is very special about our school is how we embrace different cultures and treat each other with respect. This term, we are especially excited to celebrate Harmony Week—a time for us to come together and acknowledge the rich diversity that strengthens and enriches our school community. At the heart of Harmony Week is a simple but powerful message: Everyone belongs.

It’s also important to recognise that Harmony Week leads on from the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in March. This serves as a reminder that we must all work together to ensure our school is a safe and welcoming place for everyone, where discrimination has no place.

In line with our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, we’re excited to announce the development of our very first student-friendly and student led policy on Preventing and Responding to Racism. A small group of our students who are passionate about making a difference will be leading this policy work and collaborating with our School Council.

To help us launch this vital initiative and support Harmony Week, we were delighted to welcome a special guest to our assembly— Robiel Abraham. Robiel is a graduate from the University of Melbourne and the Co-Founder of the African Youth Initiative - a youth-led Non For Profit made for young people by young people. His work aligns perfectly with our values, and we are honored to have him join us in promoting a culture where everyone belongs. Robiel spoke to our Year 7-9 students in our Harmony Week assembly about the importance of culture, respect for diversity and inclusion and will be supporting our work with the NEW policy- Preventing & Responding to Racism. Robiel also coordinates our Homework Club.

Last week, we held our Excellence Assembly, where students from Foundation to Year 9 were celebrated for their excellence and high levels of growth in learning. Previously, we have only recognised excellence in Literacy and Numeracy, but this year we have also recognised that excellence exists throughout all subject areas such as STEM, Science, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Health & Physical Education, and Spanish. Thank you to all of the families that attended the assembly to support our students and celebrate their excellence.

We were also very excited to announce our NEW house captains for 2025. We congratulate Josh Deng, Keshvi Patel, Kansiree Maichob, Lazarus Akioka Savaii, Mannat Ghotra, Neil Patel, Khyarn Knowles, Nabeke Tarekegn, Dona Hapuarachchi, Tapasya Dolla, Federer Toleafoa, Violet Harris, Aston Zhang, Hasika Karnati, Margaret Marama and Omar Hersi.

A big congratulations to all of our students for a successful Term 1, and yes every child has something to celebrate! Thank you to all of our families for your ongoing support of our staff and your children with their learning. I wish everyone a very well-deserved term break, and I look forward to seeing you in Term 2 on Tuesday, April 22nd.

Together, let’s Achieve, Believe, and Succeed!
