Together, we can | Mission Action Day 2025
Mission Action Day, or MAD, marks 45 years of unwavering commitment to social justice, evolving from its humble origins as Jog for Java. What began as a small group of students determined to raise awareness and funds for communities in need in Indonesia has grown into a powerful tradition. In 1996, Mission Action Day was officially established—providing students and staff with a profound opportunity to stand in solidarity with the world’s most vulnerable, while raising awareness and vital monetary donations for the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate (M.A.M.I) supporting various Oblate Missions around the world and here in Australia.

Year 7 Camp
Our Year 7 students have just returned from their Orientation Camp at the iconic Tidal River, Wilsons Promontory—an experience often remembered as a highlight of their time at Mazenod.
Over three days, students immersed themselves in the beauty of one of Australia’s most breathtaking coastal landscapes while building new friendships and developing a sense of belonging.
From kayaking and boogie boarding to beach games, walks and abseiling, the camp was the perfect blend of adventure and connection—setting the tone for a great year ahead.

Letters to the Pope
"Caro Papa Francesco,"
This week, our Year 9 Italian students put their language skills into practice by writing heartfelt messages to the Holy Father, Pope Francis, wishing him every blessing in his recovery. Their kindness and empathy reflect our Visible Wellbeing Character Strength of the Week—Social Intelligence—as they demonstrate awareness and understanding of the feelings of others. As a community, we continue to pray for his good health and strength.
Machinists compete on the national stage
The Mazenod Machinists put in an incredible effort at the Penrith Regional Sports Center in Sydney for the FRC Australia Regional competition, going up against 41 teams from across the country. In their rookie year, they finished 15th overall—an outstanding achievement—and secured a game-high 4th placing in one match, thanks to their solid and dependable robot.
Callum (Year 10), Yugeeth (Year 10), Jack (Year 10), Aarav (Year 10), Methul (Year 10), and Ryan (Year 11), along with support from the rest of the robotics team, dedicated countless hours to designing, building, and refining their robot. They spent numerous lunch breaks, after-school sessions, and weekends working on their creation, ensuring they were ready for the competition.
Thank you to all staff, students, and parents who helped make this possible. The team partnered with the 1st Place robot (5584) in a qualifying match, highlighting their strong performance and potential. The future of robotics at Mazenod is bright.
EAST Learns from the Grand Prix to Drive Sustainability
This year, Mazenod College's Ecology and Sustainability Team (EAST) has been working with Mr Daniel Paone (MOC1998), CEO of The Waste Network and ATLAST, to develop a new model for holistic 'front-to-back-of-house' waste management at the College.
This project began in February, with the students adopting the waste audit methodology that The Waste Network and ATLAST use in their work with the Melbourne Grand Prix, MCG, and Spring Racing Carnival, among other major events.
As part of this project, a special invitation was extended to a small contingent of EAST students by the Melbourne Grand Prix to attend their Driving Learning Program and tour the waste management operations of the Grand Prix. Not only did students get a first-hand insight into the planning and infrastructure involved in managing waste at large-scale events, but they were also fortunate to participate in a wide range of opportunities at the Grand Prix's Innovation Hub, including educational workshops, STEM and F1 activations, e-sports simulators, and pit stop tyre-changing competitions.
In the coming months, under the direction of Mr Nathan Fallon (Mazenod College Ecology Leader) and in collaboration with Mr Tony Coghlan (Director of the De Mazenod Family Education Network), students will be working with Daniel to compile a detailed consulting paper proposing new waste management approaches to improve College sustainability. This paper will form the basis of system-wide waste management interventions throughout the College in 2025/26.
